Hi! Is there something different about the voltage on a Def TD5 cigar lighter?
Will light a fag but will not charge or power anything else - from Tom Tom to tyre pump...

No idea :p my 300tdi disco will light a cigar and power the tyre pump :D check the connections on the back and see if any are loose ?
All wires are sound. Whipped a new lighter in but no difference so put the original back that's why I was wondering about voltage etc....a friend of mine had an early 90 and had a similar problem - the lighter only had a trickle charge and he had to rip out the wires and reconfig.

As said by the boyband.
Check the connections and the voltage its outputting. If your tom tom needs 12v and there is even slightly less it just wont be enough to make it work. You might have a bit of corrosion on the connectors.

Get your self a little multimeter or a 12v test lamp.

same on my td5, don't think its voltage as heating element will draw more power than a phone charger, i think its terminals don't marry up inside.

There you go. Good thinking. :p

I got a TD5 and mines good for the tom tom though, and a laptop car charger.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Will test voltage in the morn and check for corrosion. If all are okay I will rip the damn thing out, take some chargers to the store and say 'Oi, I want a lighter that will charge these please'....I say Oi because most guys in car shops roll there eyes  when they see a woman - it's a man thing...;);)

I replaced my 12v socket with one of these:

12v Power/charger socket 20AMP Boat/LandRover/ipod/mini | eBay

Seems to work fine with all my charger plugs.

;)

that seems a good idea.

I put one of them 150 watt windscreen heaters/demisters in my disco1 before the cold came last year, but found it was melting summit in the cigar socket and/or plug.
so I wired the heater into the ignition wiring just after the switch with a decent inline fuse on supply,
windscreen heater/demister work great, but just maybe I could have used one of your quoted 20amp sockets,
still might,
as the wiring is all there now,
just needs a 20amp plug being put onto feed lead from heater thingy..

That makes sense, if pos and neg are swapped round it'll still work with a heating element (cigar lighter) as that doesn't care which way the power goes....everything else does....swapping them over might work!
