I've recently mounted the electric winch that used to be on me 110 onto me trailer. Went over to me mates this morning to take a motor to the scrappers for him and when I started winching it on the cable snapped clean through just where it went into the crimp that holds the hook on the end. I'd had a look at it a couple of weeks ago and it seemed fine but it appears to have rusted from the inside. Luckily there was very little strain on it when it went so no damage or anything nasty but worth having a good close look at yours if you've got one. Dunno how old it was as it came with me 110 when I bought it.

Sounds like a lucky escape

Just outta interest ......... how often do those of you who have a winch check the cables, fixings etc???

depends on how often you use it and in what environment.

Hughs, where was your winch blanket ;)

Another reason to buy plasma... or replace your steel one for 15quid every 2years.

should really be checked as it is paid out everytime ya use it, takes 2 minutes tops and could save a limb;)

yer but who the feck realistically does that apart from the health and safety freaks :)

most people are of the "awww, i been fine" attitude. myself included!

:D sliced my arm on a winch wire a few years ago down to the bone (an industrial accident),a 16mm wire parting with 8 tonne on it don't stop when it hits skin. ever since then any wire that i'm gonna be near gets checked every time its used. first sign of broken strands or perminent set in the wire and it's outa there. i'm worth a damn sight more than a length of wire so it's not worth the risk.
helps when you work in the lifting game and can knock up your own wires:D

dont blame yer. i wouldnt go near a wire again if that happened. The one on my winch has some flat spots. I got a new wire to go on. Just waiting till i fit it to me new 90 before putting the new stuff on :) still on the look out for a nice ARB bumper for it.

seen the demo's on the plasma ropes, been to works to see em tested to destruction and still don't know if i really trust em. maybe i'm just too old fashioned:rolleyes:

Got to admit I don't check it evey time I use it. To add insult to injury me solenoid burst into flames a few minutes later too. So that's a new cable plus I think I'll get a new contactor unit with a wireless remote so I can stand well out of the way in future;)

If you oil in your winch cable on a regular basis then it helps prevent rusting from the inside out and also pulls flat spots back into true. I oil my cable once a month wether it needs it or not. A winch cable usualy lasts me 3-5 years which aint bad seeing as it is being used for approx (on average) 30 mins HEAVY load hauling a day.

That sed: Etymology: formerly verrel < ME & OFr virole, iron ring on a staff < L viriola, dim. of viriae, bracelets, via Celt < IE *weir-, wire, twisted work (> wire) < base *wei-, to bend, twist > L viere, to twist, bind around; sp. altered after L ferrum, iron

So it kinda meks sense.

See, who fekin sez LZ has no respek fer the inglish language?
