Storey so far

we have done some research , we have found the chassis number which is next to the servo, the chassis number matches the one on the v5 log book, it has 88 inch wheel base, which is ok, it has had a disco engine conversion, this was stated to our insurance and checked. It has defender front lights and grill.
It states on log book and vin 1965, we have been told to hpi the chassis number and engine..... So its not a 90 defender, just the front end is, it is a 1965.
It has been sugested to us not to advertise it as a 1965 landrover, but just landrover (suitable for off road)

does it have coil or leaf springs for the wheels....

the chassis number is stamped on the front leg.hard to see but easy to hide.

HPI DONE!! .. at another cost but one thats worth it!

everything is legal, not stolen . that includes vin number engine number & reg plate!

so it,ll be a tax exempt 90 hybrid then

can you look at the front and rear axles and see if they have circular springs mounted on the top or long springs mounted underneath?
Can you tell us - is the gearbox 4 or 5 speeds?
Is the reverse gear left and up or right and down?

I havent seen anything on there cept the number plate from 1965......dunno about tea leafs but tax exempt?No, no no nononnononono

Do '65 Series(90) have VIN plates - didnt on my '84 - had a plate on the centre tunnel?

When were '90's introduced?
can can a '90' be 88"?

Hi Not Happy

In order for a vehicle to retain its original identity and age related plate it has to accumalate a certain number of points. Points are awarded for each original main component of the vehicle. (chassis, engine, gearbox, axles, etc). To settle the arguement once and for all the best thing you can do is to contact your local DVLA office and arrange an appointment to take your vehicle over. They can check your vehicle over and tote up the points for you. If the vehicle is found to have not enough original parts it will simply have the age related plate swapped for a Q plate. This will then legalise the vehicle again. If enough parts are remaining it will retain its original identity. If a major alteration has been made to something like the chassis (say 4" cut off or added etc) then the vehicle will need a single vehicle alteration certificate to prove it is up to standard. Without this the vehicle is worthless as it is pretty much un-insurable.

chances are - its just a 90 that has had a Series number plate fitted to it, to get "tax exempt status" - aint it? maybe nothing odd about the motor - just the plates?

A chap near us bought a wreck of an 88". The chassis was too far gone to repair so he bought a galv one from Richards. Then bought a 200tdi motor from fleabay - he thought it was a defender, however when it was delivered it was a disco one with no engine number (he was gutted). Anyway he rebuilt it using various parts. From the outside it resembles a defender but the inside is a bit of a hybrid.

He notified the DVLA who issued him with a new v5 and a q plate. Not sure if that alters the price of the insurance?

The point being that he had been the victim but the DVLA had sorted him out, and yes he pays road tax; the thing he was trying to avoid in the first place!

Thanks ratty, that seems like a do-able task, the simplest thing we have read yet, We have been told about the points thing, and we are just sooooooo relived that the vehicle isnt stolen. we have printed off the HPI check.

the paperwork you have means nothing.would you care for 1 of our local members to you to inspect the vehicle for you...it may help you in understanding what you may have brought legal or not on paper its the parts that matter as to what the vehicle is.can we hav an underneath shot of the vehicle.you know axles prop shafts suspension....

Is there any chance you can let us know how you get on with sorting your landy out?

Don't forget we are here to help you aswell as harrass you so if you ever want any advice on anything else landy related then by all means pop in. Be sure to wear your rhino hide coat though as the banter can sometimes get a little scathing.

then he will know the difference between suspension types which will date your chassis.This will enable you to find out if the vehicle is tax exempt or 1 that has had older plates fitted to avoid road tax costs........

Beast O bodmin - I appreciate that you are trying to help, but i really dont want a stranger coming to look at the vehicle, my other half works alot and I have my 2 little boys to think about, we would prefer to take it to someone ourselves. ie Dvla. Trust me wont sell this vehicle until we get to the bottom of this.

we are obviously nervous about this whole thing as some people have texted us and obtained our address by deciet, and we have also had people texting pretending to be police officers, so im not very trusting at the mo.

The mad hat man - alot of people we know locally have sugested this also that the vehicle was altered (modified or whatever you call it) to avoid paying tax

surely yu can look underneath to see what springs you have fitted?
