Check Engine Light on, S&M lights flashing, accelerator not working

I just purchased a 2001 Discovery II, TD5, automatic transmission, 75,000 kms. I was driving the car the same day and all of a sudden the accelerator stopped working, the S&M lights started blinking, and the check engine light came on. First this I did was pulled over and turned off the engine and pulled the key out of the ignition and waited about 10 min. Started again but the problem persisted. Had the car towed home and tried starting it in the morning. It started fine but the S&M lights are still flashing, check engine light is on and accelerator will not work. Has anyone experienced these problems or does anyone have any solutions?

Might be a faulty throttle position sensor at first sight, jiggle it and check connection but the sensor could be at fault itself...it comes together with the pedal , the one in the pic

BUt the best is to plug in a dedicated tester to see the fault code in the EAT ECU cos the MIL and M/S lights together could have many other causes, see attachments

Thanks sierrafery,
I reside in Nairobi, Kenya. My mechanic just came and checked out the car and said he would turn off sensor for the above. He said the biggest problem is the state of the roads in Kenya. As a result the sensor will keep coming on. Is this true? Also he says if we bypass the sensor then I will not be able to use the sport mode but performance will not be affected. Is this true?

Bollox, find other mechanic, this one is full of sh*t.... this sensor is effectively the throttle position's input in the ECU, u can't just bypass it, D2 doesnt have a cable for acceleration, only this sensor. See the attachment

Hi Sierrafery... another mechanic came and plugged in to a diagnostic unit and found out the sensor was at fault. Has taken out the sensor and is fitting a new one. Hopefully all should be ok now. Hes coming back tomorrow morning with the new one. you recon the S&M flashing lights could be because of this as well?

Yes, cos i suppose he saw that in the EAT ECU fault...if u watch the fault tables i attacched in my first post u'll see P1884= CAN message: Throttle position invalid with MIL and M/S lights on .... are there plenty of Land Rovers(not Series) in Kenya cos i'm up to move there an open a garage

sierrafery....got the car up and running...the problem was as you rightly diagnosed the throttle sensor. However there was also a short in a wire that was leading to the ECU. The wire was replaced and everything seems to be up and running now. thanks...
