It might sound daft but how am I supposed to check the automatic transmission fluid, The manual says something about jacking it up and putting it in and out of Drive while filling with fluid, Do you have to do this to check the level of fluid ???
Sounds a bit dangerous to me. !!!!

how was it an improvement you have to go under to remove plug and fill you only have to run through gears to make sure all clutch pistons etc have the same amount of oil as they would when running start up run through each each gear till you feel it grab once done leave running in neutral and check oil etc you dont have to keep going through gears once is enough from cold

most of the stuff they change is not to make it better or to lengthen vehicle life but to make it cheaper and simpler to build and to reduce servicing times costs ,which the latter definately is detrimental to vehicle life ,l322 gearbox was originaly filled for life now even lr change the oil,when 300 range was made ther was a concious effort made to make things better,called rationalisation parts between vehicles became common ie wheel hub was same front back and same def,disco ,rrc,and easier to service ,this made it easier and cheaper for them and us ,but as now moved to the ridiculous or point of more money saved decreasing benefit to all in long run,to a point soon if not now ,ie changing whole wheel hub instead of just bearings,packing disco 3 roll bar bushes as cant change them once vehicles a few years old,filled for life gear boxes ,etc

This is the procedure:

1. Commence with a cold engine, start the engine, handbrake on;

2. Cycle through all gear lever position allowing 1-2 secs for the box to take up drive, then put back into neutral and put the transfer box lever in neutral;

3. Now get under the car, identify the level fill plug (Torx50 from memory) and remove the plug. There should be a dribble of oil comes out, if there is none, top up with Dexron III atf until it does, thenreplace the plug.

Cheers
Dave

This is what my D2 V8 workshop says for refiling the gearbox if you need to do that, I can't see it being different with a TD5.

10. Select 'P' (Park).
11. Ensure handbrake is applied.
12. Start engine and allow it to idle.
13. Apply footbrake.
14. Move selector lever through all gear positions, while continuing to fill the gearbox. Select 'P' (Park).
15. With engine idling, continue filling gearbox until a 2 mm bead of oil runs from oil filler/level plug hole.
16. Fit new sealing washer to automatic gearbox filler/level plug, fit plug and tighten to 30 Nm (22 lbf.ft).
17. Stop engine.
18. Remove all traces of oil from gearbox casing.
