Chains Front or Rear

Dear all
As you do when returning from the Scotand / England match at the weekend, after the post match post mortum we started to discuss the weather.
I had come completely ready for everything - Sleeping bags, shovels and of course Snow Chains.
I have had these snow chains for years and used them many times in the Alps. I have always put them on the Front Wheels (Steer & Drive - I thought) however my mate seems to think they would be best put on the Rear Wheels (Lord only knows why)
Who is right & why?
I really would love to show him the results of this post (only if I am right of course)

Is it legal to have chains in the UK I thought it was outlawed now? (you get shot for it apparently by firing squad )

Question has to be. Why would you need snow chains on a Range Rover in Berkshire?

Personally I would always fit to the front and LR only on the front seems to me like LR trying to sell their overpriced stuff.
I agree with Wammers why would you need snow chains, I've not found much that the P38 won't do.

You are right why use chains in Berkshire - I don't but I do ski once or twice a year & I have had to use them on a few occasions (Alpine Regions it's the Law)
Always on the front (non LR parts) without any trouble

Rud who make the Land Rover (re-badged) snowchains recommend that chains are only used on the rear axle. This I believe is due to the 8 inch wide rims (255/55x16) fitted with chains rub on the chassis while turning, if you have the 7 inch rims (235/70x16) as fitted to basic DT's, theres a bit more room so you may get away with it...

Says the same in the RRC manual - but can't think why LR ones only on the front and non-LR ones only on the rear??

As you see from my avatar I have fitted the chains to the front and it got me up Mt Nemrut in Turkey.Some places when travelling through Europe it is illegal not to carry snow chains in winter.
