Yep, thats what's happened! My lovely Disco has failed its MOT big style!

All four shocks, trackrod, bushes all round, read brake discs, 5 advisories, including the headlights, ALL four shocks, one wasn't even bloody attached FFS! Passenger door couldn't be opened, front tyres thread, yet bizarrely, the one thing I was dreading, the emissions, it passed, and quite how I will never know because it is like a steam train for the first half an our every morning! Unreal!

Its going to be ready on Tuesday and I am going to be over a grand poorer, but I still can't wait to get her back and feel what she rides like with shocks that actually work!

If yu have been driving it like that - yu need the book throwing at you - It shouldnt be on the road .
why?your assuming he knows wot his doing.MOT tests are there for a reason.if you fail a test then your vehicle is unroady worthy.had a festa fail on headlight beam.paid a fiver and watched the MOT man change the switch from 3 to 0.job done.but it was still"unroadworthy"

How could I have known for one second all that was wrong with it?

Stating that is a bit off, not everyone with a Landrover is grease stained and born with a spanner in their mouth!

Thankfully thats what an MOT is for, to identify the problems a car has, and since its a work truck and regularly tows a trailer full of fencing posts or 2 tons of ballast and goes across fields every day of its life I hardly think its a case of me not maintaining it, it just lives a hard life!

I live in Dartmoor, the hills around here kill brakes, destroy wheel bearings and make most turbos die within a year, its not a gentle amble across a flat road here, and the mechanic seemed to think that it was pretty much what he expected......

Possibly, but your still assuming.I didnt notice the difference in beam poatterns but id like to think id notice the difference in pads and shocks. However the OP didnt. At least his got it sorted. My advice for the future is have it looked at regulary, services and MOTs.If ever in doubt get it looked at by a qualified person.Maybe he did the majority of that at a PnP.

im only 60 or 80 miles east of you then !!!
even more reason to keep it in tip top condition !!!

Really?

So when I put it in for a service and the mechanic failed to mention any of these problems that my fault yeah? I do a service a year on my truck and I pay about £400 plus for the mechanic to change parts that cost about £60. Now I pay him that because he knows what he is doing, I don't.

Pointless buying a dog and barking yourself!

you might like to mention to him when you visit next that you've been driving a death trap, you say it's worked hard yet you only have it serviced once a year - perhaps you are mechanically ignorant but just once a year shows a lack of common sense
