So the big project for this year was going to be replacing the springs, rear first then the front two in time for winter proper. When the ‘shuddering’ saga took over they nose dived down the list but when she was up on the ramp it was noted that one of the rear ones was blowing a bit with a couple of gaps now visible and overall they would possibly get an advisory at MoT and that would have been about six months ago.
Having had a proper kick in with the ‘shuddering’ saga when replacing one bit always seemed to become three or four bits the dilemma is just get all the springs, u bolts and bushes replaced or break the project down to the rear springs and shocks plus bolts et al in this hit and leave the front until later. The shocks seem fine, very old though, but stripped down they would be easy to get to. Cost is a factor. Paddocks seem to offer the best overall price for all I need, alas my local usual place seems stupidly more expensive, and Craddocks have most of the parts but I haven’t used either for heavy duty stuff before. She has had quite a bit of work done over the last few years especially and many older parts have had to be replaced mainly with what’s available so I’m not going to get bogged down with original, named spares. Are Paddocks good with this sort of thing or does anyone know of another good and competitive supplier.

Thanks. That’s me up all night then. It’s interesting to see the range of prices for the same part but springs look like you get what you pay for. On the listing from LRworkshop it just says ‘front spring 11’ which is what I will be going for. Other sites are more specific and have right or left hand side. Surely on a 1972 swb diesel they would be the same? Anybody?

Drivers side is diffrent due to weight if you fit to wrong side it will be lopsided..most after market suppliers use the same manufacturer...

Thanks for that Shippers. I thought I had missed out on a tech breakthrough. I would not recommend the LRworkshop listings as a bedtime read to lull you to sleep.it was about 1am before it dawned on me that my life was veering off course.

Thanks for that. I have sent off an enquiry for 11 leafer road springs but parabolic springs are not out of the equation yet. Costs are the key thing with this project.

If I ever get on Desert Island Discs I’m not taking the LR Workshop stuff with me. I need time now to get my life back on track
So after much research Paddocks won out and new springs, bushes and shackle bolts are on the way. I needed to spread the cost so I didn’t get any U bolts as I could get them next month more locally. One more element of confusion is listings that show U bolts for numerous models and years and suffixed axles. A 1972 2.25 swb has a few options available for it ranging from flat or curved and even metric. One listing shows that for the rear springs I need three plus ‘one other’ but I cannot find the fine details for ‘one other’. I might be able to clean the existing ones up, there’s no rust, but new ones would allow for the angle grinder if necessary. Anybody got any ideas?

Well the leafers went on today. My goodness it’s like riding a well sprung mattress set on a bed of marshmallows. Having a good probe and poke around whilst she was up on the ramp produced a very short jobs list for next year but work around the fuel tank might get tricky. I might be able to afford some diesel in a week or so
