Hello,

I was working on my car the other day and discovered a rather large hole in my exhaust pipe. Had a look on the internet for a replacement and there are two versions, one with a CAT and one without. This might be a stupid question but how do i know which one i need for my '96 300tdi disco?

Thanks

I take it it's the cat section that has the hole in?

If so buy the decat pipe. It's a fraction of the cost, It's not needed for the mot and will give you more power.

So either will fit, it is just a matter of if i want a CAT in there or not? I have already blanked the EGR so i might aswell go all the way and get rid of the CAT to! The hole is in the pipe between the two silencer-type boxes close to the box closest to the engine.

zactly. ;)
It's more a question of do ya wanna fork out £220 odd fer nuffing. Or would you rather spend £60 ish and have beer money left?
The cat on the 300tdi is more of a filter than a true cat.

And it is reckoned that after it is a couple of years old or so, it ceases to provide any useful function.

Incidently, a lot of people on the forums, myself included are replacing the Disco catted downpipe, for a Defender non-catted version. £21 from Paddocks.:D

My disco in at the body shop at the moment (costing the insurance company £2200) so i cant go out and have a look but is the down pipe section the part that runs from the manifold to the horizontal section. If i were to buy the defender non cat down pipe and the discovery centre and rear silencer assembly would it be a straight swap or would work need to be done to make the defender part fit?
What is the difference between the discovery non-cat down pipe and the defender non-cat down pipe, apart from £38?

Hi Discodave & Ratty: I haven't actually done mine yet so I can't speak from personal experience, but I know a lot of people on the forums has done this with the Defender pipe and have had good results; bearing in mind we are talking Tdi 300 all the time.

The def pipe is the pipe which goes from the bottom of the turbo to the underneath and the joint with the middle pipe/silencer box. It differs from the Disco non-catted version in one respect in that it DOES NOT have the flexy section that you will see from underneath, just before the pipe joint.

All who have done this mod report easy mounting and good results with slight improvements in performance/economy.

The reason the flexible section is in is that it helps stop engine vibration being transferred to the exhaust system, i assume to prevent any damage to the CAT. If the CAT is removed then i guess there is not point bothering with the flexible section either!
I will look getting rid of what is there now and fitting this new set up if it is better and cheaper than replacing with what i have now!

Alright boys, I did this job about 2 months ago with the exact same part biglad is refering to for the 300tdi Defender. It replaces the original downpipe and cat perfectly and as biglad says the cat is more a particle collector that a proper cat as there is no lambda sensor thing.

I also replaced all the boxes in my exhaust with a length of 63mm diameter tubing, sounds amazing now too, power up slightly and it walked its MOT no issues.

The only problem I found was slight vibration for a couple of days as I think this must be to do with the flexible bit of the pipe no longer being there, but a good session off roading soon sorted that out and its stopped now, make sure you use plenty of WD on the studs/nuts on the manifold as there a tw@t to get off and damn awkward to get to too, many scraped knuckles and bruied wrists ahead, but a great mod...

Thanks for that Girv, I really must get off my arse and get this done - I'm waiting to unleash the beast !!!

Well, maybe more realistic that it just goes a bit better:eek:

Beast???? u are having a laff aren't you? don't expect a sudden booast in BHP and Torque and any tyre smokin action, it'll just feel like it breaths easier and revs more freely, well worth it for 20ish quid tho'

Bes o luck big lad!

Sorry Girv, it's just my ironic sarcastic sense of humour:eek:  ;)

Good te above posts are all but a wast of time

TDI 300 = diesel = NO CAT, its just a friggen muffler.
CATS are for petrol and are full of rear earth materials that get realy hot so that we are not breathing in nasty stuff, that all so set the grass on fire.

what you have is just a boring old muffler, cut the thing out and just put a bit of pipe in there, if you are worried about the coppers, get a hot dog type and weld that in. easy as. the up side is the turbo should spool up a bit quicker, IE she will start pulling like a 14 year old pommy school boy.

We all know its a "muffler" clean but the bods at LR tell us its a CAT to get us to part with money we don't have too. If you read my earlier post I replaced it with a Defender pipe for 20 english pounds and replaced the rest of the "mufflers" with 63mm bore pipe 10 english pounds, no problems with the Fuzz they look, tut and get on with bothering other petty criminals.........

Oh and biglad I guessed that was your sense of humour no one in their right mind would buy a Landy for performance reasons, I too have a similar sarcastic sense of humour which I feel may be lost on our antipodean cousins.........

With full articulation UJ's should be no problems. Bars and sliders are fine - all my vehicles have had them, made in me garage from HD box section and tube.
