Hi all,

I have an 05 plate 2.7 TDV6 which is refusing to start. A few weeks ago it started playing up with a complete absence of low down power and I assumed (and still do) that the EGR valves were at fault. As it's my partners car it hasn't been driven for a couple of weeks and this morning I have gone out to move it so I could fit the EGR blanking kit. It turns over and attempts to start but it just dies and I then get various faults appearing such as Handbrake, Gearbox, HDC System etc.

I have done a hard reset with no success and I have the battery on charge now (on the car) just in case it is related to low voltage but to me if the battery is charged enough to turn the car over (voltmeter shows 13 volts from the battery) and it almost starts (it runs for about 1 - 2 seconds). I also put my boost pack on the car but this didn't help.

I don't have the diagnostic kit to do much more but was hoping there would be some tips and guidance from the forum.

Can anyone please help?

Thanks

D

I'd say the battery is poor
All the fault warnings are a sign of battery failure, the ecu's on the car require a steady voltage to function but aren't getting it, so are going berserk

In my experience of modern "cars", the above does not apply - I have a pal with an L322, and that thing eats batteries for fun. When it has, he gets all the same sort of symptoms as you are having. So....

+1.... time for a new battery - in my pals experience, make damn sure its the proper one for the car

important is to measure voltage on it while cranking cos it can turn happily over but the voltage to drop then below 10V and the ECU needs more than that to manage injection

I am sure you are correct that this is battery related as the only thing that has changed from normal is that it has been stood for a couple of weeks and it has been freezing. However I charged the battery and I am now getting over 15 volts from it. I have tested when the car is cranking and I am getting 11 volts or thereabouts (up to about 11.3 or so) although it is erratic while the car is cranking. At the moment I am not getting the HDC errors so I am assuming that these occur once the battery depletes further.

Under these circumstances shouldn't it start?

If I didn't know better I would say it was out of fuel or the fuel system needs bleeding as it sounds as if it is fuel starvation. This of course would make sense if the ECU isn't firing the injectors.

Thanks

At that voltage it should start... tester is needed otherwise it can become expensive to start replaceing bits on guess...like for example fuel pump or crank sensor, can you hear the pump running when you turn ignition to II?

I have called green flag out as I cant move it. I am never overly impressed by these guys as most of the time they just want to tow you but we will see. He may have a diagnostic tester though so its probably worth doing.

UPDATE - Green Flag man got it running. It seems that there was an airlock in the fuel line. It wasn't showing any fault codes when he stuck his tester in. Hopefully EGR will be tackled tomorrow!!

Thanks for the input all.

Not sure what the cause was and it has never happened before. Only thing out of the ordinary is that it has been stood for a few weeks without anyone touching it. Hopefully it will start tomorrow and I can get the EGR blanking kit fitted.

None taken.... :D:D:D:D

Updated update - EGR valves now capped off and the car is back to normal. The pipes etc didn't look excessively clogged so what is it exactly that effects the cars running?

The benefit is that the engine runs with pure air without getting exhaust gas into the intake which will keep the IAT lower so better combustion
