Well, I can't offer a prize, but... Can anyone identify this object? While tapping the spanner to undo the oil filter on our P38 diesel, I heard something fall to the ground. This was under the engine. Clearly a cap of some kind, with 25nm on the front. Is it an essential part of the machine? Thanks in advance!

Is that not the insert nut part of the oil filter housing, you can see it in the end here bottom left

Paper cartridge on the oil burner. Early engines have ally cap but later ones went for plastic that is prone to crack.

As above it's just a finisher bung for the oil filter cap, prolly got caught in the socket.
Thanks for your answers. That's a relief. It must have got caught in the socket and fallen out without me noticing, as suggested. Only prize I can offer is a morning crawling underneath with me to help grease the propshafts - available to any lucky winner who can make it to Morecambe Bay!
