I have had my freelander for 3 weeks now, we have just been away. On the way back on the motorway i noticed it was spewing out black smoke from the exhust, also the engine didnt seem as powerful when i excelarated. Does this mean the exhust has blown, or could it be another problem? Also will it be safee to drive to get it fixed? Sorry for the stupid questions, but I havent a clue about these sorts of things!!! :(

Just had same thing. Presuming its a TD4
Open bonnet and look at top of radiator where there looks to be a smaller radiator. This is the intercooler. You will see two large squishy black hoses coming from the left and right sides of the intercooler. My bet is the longer hose which has a habit of rubbing on the top of the engine block has a tear in it. You will have to look behind it where it dips down.
Easy to replace (about £16.00 + vat) but the clip securing it to the intercooler is hard to get to without loosening the front bumber/grille.
I managed it and am a novice.
Regards.:)

thanks all, it went to the garage this morning and they said it will most likely to be the hose. At least its still under warranty :)
