hello there, any advice on this issue as always would be gratefully received.

have just towed sisters 300tdi disco home for her, is dark but am going back in the morn to take a look so any advice is welcome.

The problem.. sister said that there was a smell of burning followed by smoke (this smell was still present when i arrived and definitely smelled like fused wire). Sister said smoke had come from RH side of engine just behind fans but in the dark I couldn't see anything. She had stopped the car at the shop and when she got back in it wouldn't restart and the immobiliser warning light was on.

any ideas would be very much appreciated, thanks

Something shorted wiring wise -

Take the battery off, (radio code and all that) -

Check for chaffed wiring - the burnt bits might be a clue

the ECU may be naffed - fuses ?

stop solenoid ? prolly not

alternator ? maybe -

could just be water has got in and arced summat

Daylight will help tho ;)

Easy enough, as you say. While you've got the belt off you might as well check waterpump and the condition of the serpentine belt, and all the other 'bit and bobs' your sister might have missed. After all, what else are brothers for...........? At least your sister has a Disco, mine has a Ni***n Qa****i.
