Hi All,
I am still after that ugly smell. Brought the car to the garage for Mot some days ago with my wife behind in the car to pick me up and she staid well behind because of it. Whitish smoke at first traffic light that I thought it got foggy. Though Mot went well except for some minor oil leak at front/rear diff, which gets fixed, I am still wondering what it could be if anyone has an idea?
Had it just running, in idle all good, when accelerating it started at 1500/2000 rpm and disappeared once back in idle. My wife said while driving it home after picking it up it took long (3mi?) to get properly warm. Not sure if that is related as the thermostat was renewed in 2019 with the water pump, injectors last year all, maf 2018. Could it be the coolant temp sensor needs renewal as well for the heating bit or could that be related to the smell and smoke?

About the smell is it getting too much fuel in or not enough air? The maf I had once off, but no difference. Egr maybe? I read up and down here, but couldn't find anything about conclusive. So far pressure sensor, harness, egr valve, the pneumatic one or the other. What I recognised today as well is that the throttle is a bit sluggish, but like always going to the garage then get get a response that it drives well for its age and mileage.

The maf I had once off, but no difference
a.f.a.i.k. .. it will over-fuel somewhat with the maf disconnected and the ecu default mapping used
also .. though quite rare .. a faulty maf can cause over-fueling
[ although .. usually it's the opposite ]

and make sure the injectors are all ok even though you have had them changed
+ 1 ..

Thank you Arctic2, will try that one. Had another one, but will test with this. Had completely forgotten about, that I used that earlier. Will get the injectors checked.
I had Redex in some weeks ago and wasn't driving much. Is that ok to mix with that Comma?

I should imagine so can't see it doing any harm.
Ok thanks, poured it in and a bit more diesel. Will see how it goes.

About the glow plug change. Is it difficult to do? I' asked once at the garage, because I have four new Bosch around, but they said it would be around 5-6 hours labour if I remember it correctly, which would make ~500£. Is that correct? Thought those would be underneath the manifold inlet, but that would be in the range of the thermostat change and ridiculous.

The glow plugs can seize in, in which case they mustn't be forced and broken off, or your in a world of pain.
If they come out OK, then it's just 30 minute job to replace them.
I could only change 3 on my TD4, as the 4th (was No1 cylinder actually) refused to move, so I left it in place.
If they come out though, it's not a difficult job, but the inlet manifold needs removing to access them, so that might as well be cleaned at the same time.

As above i agree with nodge but you could give your self a better chance remove the manifold along with the EGR and clean those, drop some penetrating lubricant around the glow plugs refit the clean manifold driver car for a week, then do the same process remove the manifold, more penetrating lubricant around the glow plugs, you can do this over a months period if you like, then maybe with an hot engine when you come to remove the glow plugs they come out ok, always use a good socket and go slow.

Thanks Nodge68, will give it a try myself then. Have a tin of Wuerth Rust off, hope that'll penetrate otherwise will go for Plusgas or something like that.

Thanks Arctic2 for the pictures and additional info.

After week one with the rust off, nothing so far. Put some more on yesterday and will go ahead. Bought one of those for removal
Amazon product

What's the name of those? https://www.nakatanenga.de/elektro/...enstecker-land-rover-defender-td4-2.4-und-td5 Couldn't find it so far in UK when looking for glow plug plug. The left tip one cracked when slightly trying to lift it yesterday. Can this be bought separately and can it be changed or how could I checkif still all four work? It started like normal.

PS Found that one by coincidence: https://www.motor-doctor.co.uk/products/15255839-cable-repair-set-glow-plug Is that any good?
