hi, can any one please help me,
i've recently got a 92 rangerover auto classic, it's not well already, it takes a long time to change up gear when it's cold and now it wont reverse anymore!!!do you think i should buy a new gearbox or try somthing else first? i've tryed kicking it swearing and asking the wife to push it backwards, none of these things work...

thank you, ive just slid underneath it and found a hole where a bolt used to be, so prob NO oil in it!....oops.

Convert to Quaker and get several wifes, apparently they work better in packs :)

Failing that you could start by checking the oil levels and oil "quality" in the auto-box ?

That would be Mormon not Quaker ;)

the hanging in first gear thing is common on older gearboxes. I believe it's problem with the govenor getting stuck. I'm afraid the only real fix is a rebuild. Try an oil and filter change first though. But then saying that I have read somewhere that old gearbox pros recomend NOT changing the oil on old boxes.

This is true... but that's while it's working... once it's broke you've only got a few quids worth of ATF to lose if it still doesn't work ;)

Id be impressed/slightly concerned for you if yer wife could push it.
Think you need to check the transmission fluid level.Like previouisly said it sounds like youve found the wading plug hole. You need to get under the bonnet have it running in N and check the orange dipstick
