Hi, I recently replaced the IRD on my 51 plate auto Freelander TD4, which seems to have gone ok, but now she won’t select reverse gear. She feels like she’s trying to pick up but isn’t. I’m asking how much oil should I have replaced to refill it, I’ve put approximately 4L already but from what I’ve read it takes between 7 and 9L. Can anyone confirm capacity please? Also can anyone offer advice as to what else could be wrong? Thanks

If you drained the fluid to do the IRD, then you'll only get about 4L in, as the remainder stays in the various passages and torque converter.

If the issue took place after draining the box, then was the wrong bolt removed when draining the fluid? The bolt in question holds the reverse brake band in place, and isn't the drain or level plug.
Upload a picture of the bolt used to drain the box.

I suppose it’s possible, but I can’t upload a picture at the moment, as she’s not garaged and weather is too bad to go under her. Have you by any chance got a picture of the wrong bolt, because I’d probably recognize if it’s the same as the one i removed. Thanks.

I've got a picture somewhere, but can't find it just now.
The level plug is towards the back of the gearbox, on an extension of the case casting, right next to the selector cable anchor point. The plug itself is a small Allen key plug, which takes a 5mm Allen key.

The drain plug is well forward on the casing, and takes a 24mm socket. It's easy to identify as it's the only 24mm sized bolt on the gearbox.

These are the only plugs that are removed.

Absolutely don't remove any other 13mm or 14mm bolts from the gearbox, as they secure various internal components inside the box, the removal of which will render the box inoperable, and require it be stripped apart to have the now unsecured components refitted.

Thanks for your reply. He’s pretty sure from your description, that he drained the correct bolt. We’ve heard a lot about the ‘wrong’ bolt, but not which bolt it is! You’ve been very helpful. He says he’s confused because before he changed the IRD, the gears were working perfectly, now when he selects reverse it’ll pick up drive but won’t move on acceleration. Would you have any thoughts on this? He’s totally lost, although he’s wondering if the oil pressure could be too low.. thanks again

That's interesting. I'd be draining the IRD again, and taking a look inside at the gears. The diff is visible through the drain hole, so its relatively easy to see if the innards are spinning. No spinning suggests there's an issue between the IRD and gearbox. If the innards are spinning, then the issue could be the spline link between the IRD output and the LR front wheel.

Thanks. We’ll give that a go and let you know what we find. Thanks again

Would that only affect reverse ??

Worth checking bolts unscrewed to the diagram I posted too.
No, that would affect all gears, I misunderstood the last post.
If it's just reverse, then it's the reverse brake band worn, or piston damage, or probably both. Or the wrong bolt has been removed from the gearbox.

Hi, me again. Would putting the wrong oil in the box make any difference? We’ve put ATF AG55 and possibly not enough of it? Or is that the wrong stuff please?
