Went to change the shocks, springs and brake pads on the Disco today. Front went fine with new Terrafirma shocks and HD springs fitted, with Ferodo pads stuck in the calipers.

Went to do the rear though and encountered 2 problems. 2 pretty big problems:

  1. The rear shock top mount bolt sheared off when trying to undo the old nut
  2. Can't remove the lower shock mount nut as the lower part of the shock is just spinning. Have tried to use the rubber oil filter removal strap that I used on the front but it simply wont grip this one, and I have even sand papered the surface to try rough it up a little to get a grip.

Here is a picture of the offending top shock mount that has now sheared:

It looks like this bolt is part of the bracket that I have now sprayed with WD40 in the pictures. This is held in with 3 large bolts that go through the chassis. So I am thinking I need to remove this bracket and fit a new one. But these bolts just simply will not budge.

Any suggestions?

Would it be possible to drive the car perhaps 6-7 miles to get to a suitable garage for them to sort the problem with a better range of tools than I have if thats the last resort?

Any solutions for the spinning lower part of the shock?

On the plus side of todays work, the front has now raised up about 50mm either side with the replacement of the springs and shocks. Old dampers removed barely extended back out on there own once you had compressed them. Also the brake pads are a massive improvement as when you compared the old and new pads they were a million miles apart in pad thickness. Even with the pistons pushed right back in the calipers the new pads ONLY just fitted in, so plenty of meat on them.

Hi, you just need to cut the nuts off with a disc cutter, knock the bolts thru and replace the mounts. They are not expensive, around 11 or 12 pounds each, just did mine recently.

Are you talking about cutting the nuts holding the bracket that has the mount bolt on that I have snapped, and replacing the whole bracket?

Where did you get your bracket from? Bolt sizes?

Order a new rear shock mount the thread breaks and it can be quite common if they havent been undone for some time. Forget bihex socket set get a 6 sided 13mm on them Assuming they are 13mm. If you are 13mm but feel loose try 1/2 inch again 6 sided you may have to hammer the socket on. hold the nuts with a good quality spanner ideally a beefy one again 6 sided or a 6 sided socket and bar (if you can get in there with a socket.

pair of steelsons!!! can't beat them use carefully!

Perfect tool for the job.

Also shock mount cutbolts n push them through.buy new bolts

As for spinning shock grab it with stilsons and hold firmly not to crush it.and if that fails then buy a nut splitter.

Also when shock and bushes are out clen out the cups with a file or some sandpaper as crap can build up in there.

Simple solution to snapping your bolts is to CLEAN them first, use a wire brush and loads of WD40, take a good 10mins + on each one, will make your life a lot easier!

We use a big pair of grips or something like to lock onto the old shocks. Or a spanner on the end if you can get one on!!
