Morning, just nipped over from the R/R forum for a bit of help.My mates Disco1 has lost its brake lights.I have checked the bulbs and there is power to the pedal switch.bypassing the switch doesn't lluminate the lights .I have done a search and one post mentioned a relay but not which one,So just asking is there a usual suspect, when this happens? relay, block connector, earthing point etc. Thanks in advance

There are two series of D1s, each has a different wiring scheme but there isn't any relays involved in the brake light circuit on either vehicle when it left the factory. There's a common earth connection local to the tail light units

Thank you, all the other lights work so I guess the common earth is ok.I have lost Rave off my tablet so can anyone tell me the colour wire for the brake light? Will have to chase the wire back from the pedal switch,

It's not about mind reading, IMO it's about logical deduction of why he said that:

now you said in the first post that you checked for voltage at the brake switch but did you check at the clusters what's missing?, the live or the earth cos that's important

Not yet but I deduced that, as I was kindly informed, both variations share common earths at the light clusters so as all other lights work then the earths are ok. Before I start chasing the wire back from the pedal switch I posted the problem in case there are common faults with the D1,as there are with the P38's and someone may have information that could save me time and work.

It has 23 pins and the brake lamps circuit is through pin 9 green/purple wire, ... you need a RAVE

I certainly do, I had it on my laptop but it dissapeared when I changed to Windows 10. I downloaded it again and it wasn't the same version as I had and a lot of earlier info was missing. From memory the green/purple wire feeds the pedal switch and that is live, the output from the switch is green so I will follow that back to the light clusters and possibly run a new wire.

The output from the pedal switch to lamps should be G/P and the feed from fuse G/O according to the diagram i have for '97 D1 and that's what i told you but if the reality is dfferent than the scheme or if you want to chase that from memory i have nothing more to say

Well just an update, lights now working. You could have read Rave until you were blue in the face and you would have still been non the wiser! Pedal switch was completely different from what is listed and wether the loom had been moded in the past who knows? There must be a break in the wire from the switch to the rear of the car which I replaced. Thanks again Discool for your input.

That 13 foot of wire came in handy then. ;);):D
