Spotted a small oil eak the other day so I called LR Assist out and the guy came and sorted out what he says was a blocked breather.

While he was there we got chatting about tuning etc and I showed him Rons box (had taken it off prior to calling them) - he said that there had been no reason to take it off to call him out and he basically didnt give a hoot but it was a good idea to take it off before letting a dealer near a car.

He asked why I didnt take off the the blue pipe attached to a vacuum thingy pipe if I wanted more performance - he explained that this pipe recycled exhaust gases back to part of the induction cycle and, in so doing, this bought down the emmisions - he reckoned that this has quite an effect on performance.

I have to say that I have been so busy with Rons box on, then off, then towing the van this weekend I cant really say whether I have noticed a difference in performance with it off - just wondered if anybody else had heard of this??

Cheers

Think the Willo might have knowledge wiv this [might be wrong but think he used a ball bearing in the pipe or summit ], Willo where are ya mate , he' lives a long way so he'll take a bit longer to re- ply , slow puters in Belgium i live six Galaxy's away and can still beat him . . .:) :) :)

I have mine totally blanked off with a plate. Makes a subtle difference to the torque - especially when overtaking on the motorway. Nothing to jump up and down about but definatelly worth £5 on a blanking plate. It tends to ensure that all your boost goes into your inlet manifold as opposed to part of it wandering off into your exhaust. Also makes the turbo more noticable as you use ALL the boost. I reccomend it but like I say - very subtle but noticable improvement.

The down side of laying about with hte EGR is that it increases emissions and kills all the little fluffy bunnies.

As a compromise, you can pull the plug from the EGR solenoid which shoiuld have a similar effect. It can reconnected when ever you want, e.g. for normal driving or MoT.

For the L-series it is located in the engine compartment, on the bulkhead. Not sure where it is for TD4.

On the photo it is ringed in green. Don't disconnect the bit ringed in red as you'll put the engine management system into "get you home" mode.

... or is it the other way around ...? ;)

Cheers

Hi,

Yes, I put a ballbearing in the vacuum tube, if necessary I still can get it out (or try to get it out at least) and reconnect it to the vacuumthing which makes the valve go open/close. Besides all the above info. blocking it off also keeps your engine cleaner as no burned gasses and smear into your inlet anymore. As for the MOT, overhere a turbo diesel can go to 3.5 of I don't know what scale, I went two times to the MOT since and I get value of 0.90, thus ?????

It should not cause a problem during the MOT, as the EGR valve only works under load, i.e. accelerating hard or towing something heavy up a gradient etc...

Yes, but at our MOT the guy steps into the car and hits the floor for some 10-15 secs. (some older engines even died on this before) when he comes at the part of measuring the exhaust, so ...

My wifes car ran cleaner according to the emissions computer with the EGR valve blocked off, the car feels better so it stays blocked.

The bunnies are more likely to be run over by her TD4 or torn to pieces by a large dog than killed by her emissions.

Standard MOT practise, however the engine is not under load!

So most of you think that blocking this pipe is of benifit , is there anyone who thinks its a poor idear ? and how do i find it on the td4,cheers . . .

Ming, sh.. man, why do you always have questions which make me have to go to the garage to take a picture to give you the answer? Do you do that on purpose or what ??:D :D (Sorry but as I have an extra engine cover I had to slide the camera between the radiator and the engineblock to have it have a look under that extra-cover, also had to put the camera on macro to have something valuable.) It's on the front right hand side of the engine, with the picture you should be able to easily find that tube. It's the vacuumtube that sucks your EGR open when needed, blocking that off makes the EGR stays closed. Please note this picture is taken from BELOW, but looking from ABOVE that round vacuumpump thing is easily recognised. (The pipe can also easily be blocked with a screw of the correct diameter, for testing purposes you can leave the vacuumhousing unblocked as all it will do is nothing.)

Well thanks Will, sorry to always ask for the photo bit, but you are good at it, and not only helps me but others , your a star. . .:)

Hi ming,
What am I? Come on, say it, the cat's whiskers ?? (A long time ago, back in 1970 I had UK guys coming over to install our first computerised telex distribution system and one of the guys called me like that, had no clue at all what it meant, someone else from the UK told me later it was a positive remark, so I wanted to believe that person.....:D :D :D ) That first guy also said something else about sleeve (or sleeves) or so, that was also unknown territory to me..
