1) Empathy- someone else has managed to do it too
2) jiggle it
3) pull steering wheel really hard

you should have posted from the car park saying your stuck - you'd have had a hoard of eager blokes descend on your location offering to jiggle it for you, perhaps with much quicker results
you could have written out a big list of questions to ask when they arrived, such as how does me DL work and where's the interior light switch
