When excellerating hard ( From standstill normally )in my 98 XEDI i sometimes get a sudden and not to mention embarrasing loss of power followed by a massive plume of black smoke out the rear end  ( the car not me) and all is well again. It does'nt happen very often but always seems to happen when you least expect it. Any ideas anyone?

Air filter is clean ?? As only happens when accellerating hard it's possible you can't get enough air hence too much fuel and black smoke ??

Check out basics first . . .fuel filter [yer have to re -bleed your model ,worth doing and check yer got no water vapour] un like uncle Willo say's [air filter] vacuum filter. . . .if youv'e still got it then injector cleaner ,its possible one is getting blocked or part blocked when running. . . . .un best oh luck :) :) :)

I had a similar problem with my TDI passat a few months back and was told that black smoke = unburnt fuel whereas white smoke = burning oil. Anyway, I took the car to a local garage where the mechanic said that most of the time black smoke indicates either a turbo problem or an air problem. Mine thankfully was an air problem as a quick inspection of all the air hoses to the Turbo unit revealed a spilt in one of the hoses.

Apparently, when you accelerate fuel goes in, spilt opens up, air mix all wrong and loads of black smoke out the back.

So have a good look at all your hoses to and from the turbo. good luck.

Black smoke = excessive fuel
White smoke = water (burnt/evaporated as leaking into cylinders)
Blue smoke = burning oil
