Ok here we go, I own a Freelander TD4 Sport 54 plate 155k, had the car 9 years now, best car I’ve ever owned, (I’m really good at changing window motors now!)
About 4/5 years ago the long intercooler hose on the left blew causing loss of power black smoke etc changed etc but ever since then I have black smoke on acceleration and intermittent loss of power it’s worse when the weather is hot. it’s been in garage a few times but can’t seem to nail the problem.
Symptoms: engine management light comes on and off every 10 miles or so, small white smoke on start up (not every time) can get a lot if parked on a tilt like high kerb (not sure it’s relevant but must be related to oil pouring somewhere it shouldn’t) black smoke and down on power when accelerating and going up hill, the harder you press the more you get! though every now and then it all works like normal with plenty of oomph and no smoke.
All hoses changedx2, crankcase breatherx2, all filters, MAF sensor, fuel regulator, EGR valve (just changed) air temp sensorx3, flomaxed.
There’s some oil coming out around the air temp sensor, (wasn’t sure if there was a small split somewhere there, I’ve changed this a couple times just on spec but it’s still the same can’t stop the leak) quite a lot of oil in breather hoses, a large amount of gunk in inlet manifold, but it is an old car.
The car passes it’s MOT just fine, no smoke while idle and to be fair it’s never let me down, used daily. Any ideas that aren’t breather hoses would be appreciated.
