hi. people
thinking of biying a fl.1 se.-td4 auto ,2006,with 44000 klm.on the clock.
what should I be looking for? is the pre-heater standard on all models?
the misses is fed-up of manuel-box on our 1.8 -2 door, its used mainly for the shopping run.
maybe a good tip?--- this our second 1.8 & we fitted doth with DEFA pre heaters , these use very little electricity and the engine is always warm when you start-up.our first freelander had done 264.000 klm.when we sold it---200o mod.only time it lets us down was when the back window motor went.

Does`nt any wone have any advice? The boss is know looking at the rav 4,and thats no bloody good ,is it ????

The Fuel Burning Heater isn't standard, I never found it made much difference, but the first few miles are steadily up hill, so it is working fro the start. I think the DEFA is. I expect you've had little responce as you've already had two, so hopefully have an idea, excessive clunks etc from the drive train, possible rear diff, IRD etc.
As regards the Td4 and auto, they're the best choice. It should change gear smoothly, it doesn't seem to be unusual for them to be reluctant to change up when cold. I've never been able to find out is this is just a common trait or and intentional feature to help keep the revs up with a cold engine. It also doesn't ream unusual for the Td4 to smoke a little when pulling away, normally more obvious in the headlights of the car behold in the dark than in daylight, but shouldn't be belching smoke out.
You will find lots of advice on here on mods you can do to improve them, can't comment on any of them as mine is standard, but then its less than 5 years old, and probably won't reach 100000 till Christmas.

Dave, you're right about them holding out to higher revs before changing up when cold. Mine does that as well, & always warmed enough to change at lower revs at the same piece of road before this extra cold weather hit us. Now it takes a little longer but still not any inconvenience. I don't have a pre heater fitted to my 03 Td4 auto & quite honestly don't think I need one. Lowest temperature so far has been around -5 degrees celcius & car was fine as was.

For improvements fit an egr bypass, Roverron Synergy & use Millers powersport 4 diesel additive. Car will be a lot better than standard, but don't expect miracles. It's a 2 litre diesel & you won't get away from that fact performance wise, but it is economical.

Oh, a Rav4 is a great car, but you won't get an automatic diesel unless it's the mark 3 (06 on) model, unless of course they offered an auto diesel mk2 to other markets. Also an auto petrol mark 2 Rav will cost you more to buy than a Td4 auto - I know as it was my first choice of car, but the Td4 was way better priced & I'm well pleased with it.

As others have stated bout FBH but the jatco auto is very good , but give it a real good test before buying, best test is when the engine is warm in normal drive boot it so that it not quite dropping down a gear and listen for rev slipping ,do the same in sports mode then each of the Manuel gears any sign of slipping then walk away[torque converter slipping] also smooth action of gears delay or banging in is sure sign of h/speed solenoids or bands wear, again walk away, best if not sure try several so you get a feel for it. . . . . . .:) :) :)

:) thanks guys
I`m going to borrow the car for a couple of days-- I noticed that the front wind screan has a lot of chips ,as has the bonit,so maybe its had a hard life????.L.R. say they will spray the bonit & change w.s.and we`re still haggling over the price,I won`t say any more about that--- prices are ALOT higher in norway & you would all prob.**** your selves of laughing.
more tips are welcome, and I`ll keep you up to date . Saterday we had -8`c after running for about 2mins warm air is reaching the wind screan, the coldist day we have used her was -28.6`c last winter, the Defa pre-heater does a great job and no-dought saves alot of wear and tair.
many thanks Mike

although unsightly, the chips probably mean it has had a motorway life, would rather have a higher motorway mileage vehicle than a low mileage vehicle that has only been used for short trips round town
