Bit missing from underneath my D1 gearbox?**pic**

Forgot to mention this before but when painting the underneath of my D1 300TDi manual I noticed that theres what seems to be a plug or similar missing from the possibly the bellhousing.
Just had a look to get the location of this hole I now have, its directly behind the engine sump plug but on the gearbox.....like in this bad pic I knocked up in MS Paint lol

Is there something that should be in this hole or is it an inspection hole for something?

Bell housing drain plug hole, only has something fitted if you're going wading.

p.s did you do a search? you would've found your answer.

....do you all stop when you come across water to put your wading plugs in?

I can see most people either leave theres in permanently or dont fit them full stop to avoid such situations.

I doubt most people do to be honest :)
 
i used to put mine in as n when needed, pretty easy.Although me mates used to think i got outta the motor and fell over....
 
next question will be where can i get a wading plug and how long can i leave it in?
You will often find one under there. It has a square end on it and is usually screw in to the back edge on the front of the bell housing. So when it needs to be fitted you just unscrew it from its storage spot and screw it into the drain hole. But plugging the drain hole for wading is usually only a issue for manual cars and the clutch. You often find that water will still get in where the bell hosing meets the sump and having the plug in only stops the water getting out. I have an auto and have done a lot of wading through deep water and have never fitted it. Fitting it also stops the oil getting out from the usual leaking rear main seal on Land Rovers. Which is not a good thing.
 
I fit mine for a day off roading and remove it at the end of the day.

usually nothing comes out save a few drops of water.

yet after a run on the motorway, oil rapidly drips out of the hole :(

worth getting one to fit for off roading, but generally leave it out :D
 
There's a second one on the bottom of the timing cover on a 300Tdi as well. Seem to remember that the engine one can be left in all the time. Remove at servicing, and if you find oil coming out, get it investigated PDQ - it probably means a seal is leaking oil onto the timing belt, and oil and timing belts don't mix!

Gearbox one a little oil (few drops) is not a problem. I think the recommendation is to remove this one after wading, but can't remember the reason - maybe venting the box?

Neither wading plug should be left in "all the time" Both can be left in permanently as long as they are regularly removed long enough to drain any oil out, that as gathered there. But I only fit mine on the day I'm going laning and remove em when I get home. If wading thru clean running water a wading plug isn't necessary but if mud is likely to be encountered then deffo fit em

Some engines only have a bell housing wading plug hole.
