As I'm welding mine up also this made a good read. I'm glad my chassis doesn't have a spec of rust. Great work.

I'd personally coat the chassis in POR15 anti rust paint and then waxoyl rather than red oxide but it'll do the job either way for years!

got the rest of the boot side panel out and cut some rot from the wheel arch....

couple of questions.

should the panel fit where it is ? or up to the crossmember ? or half inch or so further towards the front?

The other end ...... I know this should fit under the floor bit but it won't. it seems to be too long at the pointy end.
Am I doing something wrong ? or should I just cut it off to fit at where I'm pointing?

The original was only spot welded at the wheel arch, will that be ok for the new?(puddle weld), or do I need to fully weld it to the arch ??

Also..... all the second row seat fixing bolts snapped of when I took the seats out. Is it ok just to drill hole and use bolts with nyloc nuts ? or do the nuts have to be welded to the floor ?

Questions, questions, questions ............

Now then, thinking ahead, this is the bottom of the rear quarter panel.
How should I tackle this ?

As its on the bottom, I was thinking , cut the rot out, insert a patch , and glue some aluminium strips over it, inside and out.....a bit like a sandwich.
.......or chequer plate.
.......or ?

Question...

Looking down from inside into the corner ...... there’s a gap, as if the crossmember floor support thingy should be 3 or 4 inches longer.(each end)
I can plate the gap, but then the ‘u’ channel in the floor support will still be open to the elements, unless I bung it with filler.

Is this the correct way to do this?
Or have I missed something ?

The floor side panel (black) isn’t fixed in yet.

Right....sorted problem of gap.

I extended the rear floor support.!!
Hammer, vice and a bit of small box section to bash the metal over, I managed to make something close to the profile.

Found out, the original corner is sloped, but buggered if I’m going to mess around doing that.

When I get the side panel fitted , I’ll just cut off the excess.

when i was younger if a seat belt mount went or a chassis rotted through, i filled it with fiberglass filler and covered the mess in underseal :confused::confused::confused::D

Gotta love a landy getting the restoration it deserves!!

Thought I’d clamp the floor side panel in place to help stop any movement.

And given a coat of red just as the light was going .
 
Thanks for sharing this story. My current RRC is STILL sat outside 2 years after failing the MOT on Rust, and I've been putting it off, having not done any serious welding for about 15 years.
You've given me hope that I could just get on and sort it out. After all, it's only sills, boot floor, wheel arches, bulkhead, inner wings........
