So tomorrow, I'll be taking the Disco off the road and start stripping everything off to see exactly what's needed for welding. I'm thinking of doing everything this summer.

There'll be loads of piccies and even loads more questions as its a bit of a daunting task, but as I managed to do my o/s inner wing last year (and it's still attached !!), I'm hoping I'll be ok. *fingers crossed*

Starting with the rear cross member, I've been looking through past threads and like the look of Discopol's home made one. Has anyone else fabricated their own ?

Guess no one else have made their own then.

Onwards........

Managed to almost undo two 17mm bolts holding the rear bumper on but they've become stuck.......they're having a good soak of juice while I have a cool down.

Question...... Is there a 'loose' nut on the end of these bolts or are the nuts 'attached' to the chassis?

Rear bumper off .... :)

Tow bar off...... :)

Rubber strip thing off ....... :)

Rear cross member doesn't look too bad. ....... :)

Except for the ends, and the bit near the boot....... :(

How did you get on removing the plastic riv-nuts?
I tend to screw in a self tapper then pull on that with decent pliers. They come out dead easy that way and only cost buttons for new ones. Or, I suppose you can reuse the old ones if you don't mind the little holes!

Always wondered if there was a better way to remove them without causing damage?

i drilled the middles out and used a pair of wire cutters to split the remaining plastic end bits and knocked them through wiv 'ammer.

Any questions, just drop me a pm bud, it's a couple of years since I did mine but if I can help in any way feel free to ask.

Good luck

thanks DP.....

I'm taking everything off at the mo to see how bad things are and if it's worth (if I'm able to ) get fixed.

the rusty panels , I can cope with, but any more might be a bit too much. :(

My cross member was the first serious bit of welding fabrication repair I had ever done so don't be put off mate, just take it methodically and keep measuring, asking, measuring, searching, measuring and then finally making. It can be a bit daunting but it is definitely doable by novices with nothing more than a welder and a grinder, if I can I think almost anyone can.

Update.......

More bits taken off....

Drivers side sills...

Passenger side sills .......

Near side inner wing.....

These are a bit concerning....

Looking through boot to chassis...

Yaaaah.....got one side off

Hammer and putty knive was very useful.

Omg.....more rust !!!!! Lol

Another worrying bit ....... :(

Seems to have been welded before. Though it looks like they didn't do any rust preventative !!!!!

yeah, got them powder coated 2 years ago............about the only tidy things on the Disco.

oh, and the front o/s inner wing I done last year. :)
