Hey Joe, yes that's right. As abare minimum you would need to raise the car all round by at least 1 inch pref 2, plus you would also need to adjust the steering bump stops, trim the front bumper ends around the front wheel arch and trim a little off the rear edge of the rear wheel arch.

I'm assuming you mean just the tyres, not the wheel and tyre combo as the Defender wheels (pre 2005) won't fit a Disco 2 wheel stud pattern.

All I have done to my Disco 2 to fit the 235/85 R16 is fit a 2inch lift - nothing else, no trimming nothing - so the statement about having to do that work is wrong.

That may be because you lifted it  the link at the top assumes standard Discos.

Not sure but I think the link at the top relates to Disco 1 too, Disco 2 may be different.

I think most of the trimming is needed if you don't lift it ...

I think what you mean is that in your experience you didn't need to make the modifications I was suggesting.

Saying that I was wrong is a little harsh.

Just as a matter of interest what make and model of tyre did you fit to your vehicle and how do you get on with them - do you have any insures with them affecting the gearing?

I fitted 235/85R16 Kuhmo KL71's to my 300tdi Disco. I have a 2" lift & still needed to camel-cut the rear arch, or the tyre would foul, even during moderate cournering on the road, let alone during any articulation whilst off-roading.

EDIT
& I did notice an effect on gearing.....a de-cat & intercooler-clean just about got it back to square 1 regarding performance.

I have the Disco 2 TD5 - and I don't think I was harsh - as every time tyre sizes come up for the Disco 2 reference are made to Disco 1 requirements. These are different and I am yet to find a resource that is specific to the Disco 2. Everything I have found says you need to fit a lift and do the trimming for the Disco 1.

With regards to gearing etc, it is a bit slower to pull away, but other than that you won't know it was anything another than a normal Disco from the handling. I have never had any rubbing no matter how hard I have tried.

It surprises me a little to be honest because at the moment my Disco has "Forceum ATZ 235/70 R16 S" tyres on. Will the extra 15mm really make all that difference?

I think you've confused a ratio (70 profile vs 85 profile) with a measurement in mm. The 70, or 85, relates to the % height the tyre is relative to the width.

There's a tyre size calculator on the 2nd link in the sticky and you can see the difference in diameter between 235/70R16 and 235/85R16 (7.2cm, so 3.6cm approx radius difference).
