hi,

i use a D2 to tow my boat but i also do some green laning and pay and play days.

it currently runs 265/75 cooper discoverer stt's on a 16 and a 2" lift.

its very good off road but when im towing my boat, which on the trailer is near 2500kg, it mawls the disco, i think the size of the tyre effects the gearing.

so i was wondering what size would give me the best of both worlds? also without making it look like a bus on skateboard wheels

cheers :)

I run 255/70/16 Cooper Discoverer STTs, which are an offroad tyre with good road manners, and its about as big as you can go without any rubbing with a 2" lift, or need ing to trim arches.

The overall diameter isn't much more than stock, so it doesn't notice in performance. I don't do any heavy towing, but cruising speed and acceleration haven't changed. They also fill the arches nicely with the 2" lift, without looking too small.

The optimum tyre size for you would be 255/65/16. That will give you std gearing to help with the towing. Incidently 2.5tons and an autobox used in D does not make for a good combo. Have you tried selecting '3' when towing? It's useful because it will go into Torque Converter (TC) lock-up at approx 45mph (70kph) and therefore give good drive.

The tyres I had on my last D2 were General Grabber UHP's and were a great mix of on and off-road traction plus long-life. I bought them from Paddocks and they shipped them to me in France for a £5 per wheel.

Sorry I was quite vague. It a manual d2. So 255/55s you say, and you GG UHP's in that size?

I would ideally like to stay with a mud terrain. Would having it mapped have the desired effect?

If you stick with the same size tyre you currently have you are approx 10% over-geared. As towing is an important consideration for you I would stick with std size tyres, whatever the tread pattern.

A remap will give you more torque and power but it will be less obvious with over-sized tyres.

Hi Dave,
I'm new to towing with an auto. I have a Disco 2 with 255 55 18 tyres. These were standard on the Metropolis.
I tow a caravan weighing around 1700kg. Does selecting 3 when towing mean I am limited to 45mph ?
I'm also looking for some new tyres and thinking about general grabbers.

Advice would be appreciated. Thanks
Steve

Hi Steve, using 3rd gear when towing heavy loads means that at speeds above 45mph the gearbox is in it's most efficient mode.

General Grabbers are great all round tyres.
