Hi all.. Have not long got a freelander 2.0di l series.... Have been looking in to hopefuly going green laning/offroading next year.
At the moment ive kept things relatively standard.

Have just picked up a spare set of 15" steels (£20 .. thank god for ebay). With the idea of putting some off-road tyres on them and keeping the 15"alloys more for road use.

Looking around i see the main problem with the 'lander is the height... What is the best size tyres to fit to the steel's to help with this? any suggestions for good offroad/mud tyres?

Also, been looking into lift kits. Are these a wise move? have seen mixed opinions on them.

I need to keep it practical for road use.

thanks in advance.

Hi Rob,

There are a few tyres available for 15" steelies. My choice would be the General Grabber AT/2's (got them on mine) or if you want to spend a bit more go the bridgestone alternative, though i don't think there's much difference between them.

The AT/2's are reasonably good in the mud on a freeby as it's quite a light 4X4 and they're not bad on the road either (can still chuck it about a bit).

I'll be giving mine a lift kit when i get round to it, but it i think the age of your car is quite important. My freebys almost ten years old so i'm guessing i'll have to replace the driveshafts as the lift kits put a certain amount of stress on them.

Depending on how old your freeby is, you may be finding yourself replacing driveshafts if you lift it.
