Hi, looking for new tyres for freelander 1, I don't do as much off roading as I would like. So I'm looking for road tyres the vehicle is still fitted with the original 15 inch rims. I realise that these are becoming 'old' and the choices are becoming fewer and expensivse, any brands leep to mind? or should I put van tyres on it. Bearing in mind it is a commercial, so it is a van really.

All Freelander 1s after 2001 MY are interchangeable, so you can fit any size right up to 18" wheels from a Sport (my preference) on any Freelander 1, regardless of what size it left the factory with. Just make sure the 16" wheels come from a 2001MY onwards doner, as the pre-2001 16" rims don't fit over the vented front brakes, or larger rear drums.

thanks Nodge68, again

Be careful that a seller does not just tell you what you want to hear regarding the year of vehicle they came off!

I've seen 5 spoke 15s sold as "suitable for any Freelander 1".

IIRC, 2000+ wheels have little holes between the stud/bolt holes.

I'm running 15s and have GT Radial MaxMiler van tyres - same as fitted to some VW Crafter and Merc Sprinter vans at work.

I'm happy with them, especially as they were almost 1/2 the price of 'traditional' brand car tyres and wear very slowly.

However, they need to be pumped to high pressures, I was told 40psi by the supplier. So they give a firmer (harsher) ride and I thought noisy when I first started using them (about 8 years ago). TBH, I've just had them fitted and forgotten about them. I can test tyre pressures on 1/2 dozen vans at work in a day, but have hardly ever checked my own. I did the other day and the fronts were down to 15 & 17 - woops. So I pumped them to 37 all round.

Thanks for the information, I've been on the Internet, the profile is 195/65/15 for best option when it comes to price. Will that mess about with the drive train?

Well it won't muck with the drive train so long as they are all the same.

The speedo will be out by a long way. When I GPS check my speedo it generally shows 5% to 10% faster than actual. That tyre size will show it another 8.5% faster - so possibly 18.5% fast.

I'd imagine that they'd look a bit puney on the vehicle as well.

17 inch with 225/65 Tyres give you a 28.5 inch rolling diameter. Speedo is calibrated for 28.6 inches so the speedo on mine is virtually spot on. Look good and handle well too.

Hi Andy, wheels mate? Are you about tomorrow? If you are I'm in Hartland today, leaving in the morning I could come over and pick them up?
Regards Mark

If you don't want to do hardcore off roading I'l suggest you the BFGOODRICH ones. On my FL I'm having those on 15'' widened steel rims. Tire dims are 215/70 R15.
Those aren't whining on tarmac, but still getting you out of trouble on offroad.
