Banging or clunking on deceleration

As the title says, coasting in gear or neutral causes loud loud banging.

So far Ive took the front prop off but no change, checked the UJs. The rear prop has no play but it sounds like its coming from the front.

Turned the engine off while it was doing it and it carried on...

Time for new transfer box? im off outside to check the oil for bits.
 
With rear ball joint its usually one clunk each way. Taking the front prop off does not eliminate the front axle being the problem as the wheels drive the diff. It could well be in front diff . Unlikely to be transfer case . JMHO

Intresting, because the front diff housing was damaged and welded shut by the previous owner.
 
As well as removeing front prop you can disconnect drive flanges at the hubs[some oil will leak] so wheels do not drive the diff.This trick got me home once when i trashed the front axle.
 
i have a similar thing, but if i put it in gear and hand brake off on flat ground, there is play in both front and rear prop, how do i tell if the play is in the gearbox or the tranny box?

actually, mine only clunks when load comes off and on.. from the rear as well.. engine mounts might be a good call.
 
when checking for stuff remove one prop at time and run on other in difflock to isolate fault ,front prop off does it rear axle or t/box ,rear prop off does it front axle or t/box ,either prop off and still doing it t/box
 
dose it sound like this



this only happen to me when i was coasting and slowing down. turned out my break discs were warped. they were tapping the pads like tapping the breaks
 
splines on out-put shaft / gear could be worn, its quite common and can either be cured by new gear at best or whole shaft at worst.
hopefully its niether but worth a look

This is exactly like mine, it started after I put a 2" lift on ... I found excessive play in the rear diff so changed it and it made no difference. I then found a loose sliding joint on the front prop so I changed that. This has made it much better but I can still hear the same noise so I'll be changing the rear prop too. Maybe the UJ's binding up since the lift but just as cheap and easy to fit a new prop.

I checked the engine mounts and they are all cracked, looked fooked to me but Ive never checked or changed them before?
Il whip the wheels off and check the shaft but how do I know if its the other end of the shaft? diff side.

bayden, thanks for the video, It sounds similar but if the discs was warped, wouldnt it tap accelerating as well has decelerating? :S

yup but the lanndy is a prety powerfull machine, i couldnt feel it on mine but when i changed them everything was fine and its completly gone.

somthing ells maybe. i was told to look at my engin mounts when i was having the problem. you mentioned yours were cracked, give it a crack mate :)

If you have not already done so, just check that your handbrake is releasing properly. Garage that did some work on my old 90 a while back over adjusted the handbrake and it did not release fully. When slowing down for junctions/islands etc I had horrible vibration/thumping from the transmission.
Re adjusted handbrake, problem gone................
 
Update for future reference If someone searches this post.

The banging turns out to be the gearbox after the wrong oil was added. So Im off to look for a another gearbox or refurb.
