Clouds of exhaust smoke, reving its nuts off, switch ignition off, still reving, into first, brake hard, dump the clutch... stalls. phew.

I guess the head gasket has gone and it was running itself to destruction on the engine oil.

I got home with the AA's help but need to move it onto my drive.

Now the question.
I must fill it with oil first. Then can I start it and gently move it on tickover or will it all kick off again and try to self destruct?
Thanks
:)

Yeah, could be turbo oil seal more likely than head gasket.

Remove the wire off the fuel cut off solenoid, stick it in 2nd gear low range and move it onto the drive using the starter motor.

what engine is it? When was the last time you checked your oil and coolant levels? Has your landy been using oil and/or coolant recently? How many miles on the clock? What colour was the smoke? How long had it been smoking for before this happened?

might be a silly question, but do you have plenty of diesel in the tank? I had the scare of my life when I ran out. My fuel gauge didn't work at the time, so I had no idea how much fuel I had. when it started running out, the engine went in to overdrive, started revving like hell before i cut the ignition, and after trying to start it again, a big huge puff of thick black smoke when it cut out. Turns out putting some more diesel in fixed it completely, and I found two other people on here that had had the same thing happen :)

of course, if turning off the ignition didn't sort it, then it's more likely that you're looking at the problem that everyone fears :(

I was just on my way back from the Nationals, oil and water checked before the trip home, serviced regularly, plenty of diesel. 300tdi
Clouds of blue smoke, that much it stopped the traffic both ways they just couldn't see me or anything, when I turned the ignition off it still accelerated. As I said I had to stall it from high revs to stop it!
It will fire up now, tried it for a couple of seconds only.

Well, I just hope it's the turbo head seal, as I gather that's a lot easier to fix than the other stuff it could be.

Am I right in thinking that if you ran it at really low revs, the turbo would be running at negative pressure, and thus wouldn't start pumping oil in to the cylinders?

Hmmm that's the bit I'm not sure of. I thought that would be the case, but I'd like confirmation before I try it.

I'm also guessing it's the head gasket, there's a fair amount of oil on the block at the front near side at the head joint.

i rekon the turbo has failed. Take the pipe off where it goes into the turbo, and look for oil traces. grab the end of the impellar. if there is more than barely noticeable play, its fooked.

to confirm, take the pipe off to the intake manifold. Look for oil. I rkeon there will be. Turbos are easy to change on a 300, look.

And people slag the TD5 for being complimacated. :p
You can change the turbo on a TD5 in under half an hour and dont have to remove manifold. No bits to drift apart or slide back together neither.

The head gasket had gone.
Head off, no other damage, turbo and intercooler full of oil.
Three injectors came out with a struggle the fourth one is stuck fast!
Took it to an engineering works, they couldn't shift it.
Therefore I can't have the head skimmed
New head required about £300. Ouch!!!

There are firms that specialise in removing this kind of problem and they are a lot cheaper than a new head. Sounds like your engineering bloke did not want to take a chance. Do a search on google for cylinder head refurbers.

Sounds like what happened to me in my Ford C-Max two weeks ago.

Same symptons but thick white smoke. I also managed to stall it in time.

New Turbo = £900 New Cat = £700 All pipes etc £200

Only 79k on the clock.... will ford help? Will they f#ck. Its 4 yrs old.

I have owned 7 BRAND new fords since being 17, ive never kept one so long. I WILL NEVER BUY another Ford in my life and would advise others the same.

The AA that recovered us home were outstanding and I would recommend them in a minute. Especially as I had my 13 week old son stuck on the side of the motorway!!!!!!!!!!!!!

does sound like your turbo has had its last breath as well mate, if its pushed oil in to the intercooler etc then it sounds like the seals are gone on it .
sorry to hear your trouble mate as unfortunately its an expensive one, head and turbo in one hit ant nice. good luck fella

ford motor company want to realise that treating people in this shoddy manner will just alienate more and more people,in this economic climate that is in my mind tantamount to commercial suicide, deserves them right if they go under.imho that is.:mad:
