Gentlemen (and Ladies) I need your help,

My 2001 Td4 ES has developed two annoying and potentially costly problems that I would welcome any useful advice/recommendations regarding:

Problems
1. A constant droning coming from the drive train (I can't determine exactly where)
2. A nasty vibration between 55-65mph that fades up from 50mph and fades down at 70mph to a less noticable level, but is still there..

Work done so far:
1. New VCU and bearings
2. Refurbished Rear Diff and three new Diff mounts

Related observed symptoms
1. The UJ and the front prop going into the VCU has a little latteral play in it (enough to cause a metallic clang when done by hand) - when twisted in either direction there is no obvious movement.
2. The rear drive shafts can be pushed and pulled by hand by a number of mm (with the road wheels on the ground) away from the road wheels but do not show obvious play when twisted (both with the road wheels on, or raised from, the road).
3. There is oil splattered on the underside of the body above the point at which the (front) prop-shaft enters the IRD consistent with being thrown out as a result of operation; but there are no drips under the vehicle.

Questions
1. Would symptoms 1 and 2 be enough to cause the vibration and droning explained above?
2. What does symptom 3 mean?

It might help to test with the entire prop/VCU assy removed.
If the noise and vibration are gone then you have eliminated symptom 2 and go from there.
Symtoms 1 and 3 could be connected......

You could check the rear tyres for 'castellation' of the tread blocks...It may not be very obvious visually, but i had a hideous vibration and droning noise, enough to make the shopping bags shake. Swapped rear tyres to the front, and the vibration moved to the front. So to be safe I replaced all 4 tyres, and, at the suggestion of folk on here, also replaced the VCU, which if knackered can cause premature rear tyre wear.
Hope this helps,
Russ

Hi Chap - did you get to the bottom of your problem? My post was going to be identical to yours! new vcu and bearings, new rear diff and mounts and still have a growling bearing type noise and vibration at 55mph. Been told my IRD is fine...did you fix it?
