my 1997 p38 diesel auto every so often will come up with gearbox overheat on the message centre then go off again and some times it will do it again and again one after the other i have checked the oil cooler and it looks fine i have checked the fluid level and it is up to the first mark on the dipstick that i am led to believe is the cold mark and the other is the warm mark is this correct/ and what is my problem with the gearbox overheat message anyone help me please

Mine use to do this when the temperature outside drops under -5 C. In my case is just a dodgy temp sensor. The one on the gearbox oil cooler. Could be the same problem?

I like the idea of a dicky sensor but if that's not the problem -

You haven't got a foglight blocking the cooler by any chance?
What does your fluid look like?
Has it, or the box filter, ever been changed?

You may not believe this, but a dodgy battery or alternator can cause this.

the fluid has not been changed yet as i have only bought the range rover thats my next job on the list anyway. and it has no fog lamps so that not the problem i will find the temperature sensor and change that see if that stops it the auto box is not getting hot it just flashes up gearbox overheat now and again so surely if the auto box was getting hot it would stay on untill it cooled down? i have a new battery for it too that will be fitted today and i have tested the alternator and it is working fine any more info on this problem i would be greatfull

There is no cold and warm mark. Level should be between the two marks with gerabox oil cold and engine running. Start engine move gear lever through all gear positions several times place in park, check fluid level top up as required. If you have dipped box with oil hot and engine off and oil is only at lower mark you will most certainly have too little oil in gearbox.

thanks for that some people talk bull on the internet as i got told off someone on google said the lower mark on the dipstick was the cold mark and the upper mark was the hot mark so i do have too little oil in the gearbox as it is just under the first mark that would cause it to get warm i know

On some vehicles they are. But the dip stick will be clearly marked as such. Cold mark and say 40 degree mark. That does not apply to the P38. And even if you have a cold hot dipstick you still have to check with engine running and cycle lever before hand.

Just a thought, there should be a perforated grill in front of the autobox oil cooler, I've seen one with a blanking plate from the manual box version fitted.

no there is a perorated grill infront of the oil cooler i checked that first. if it is getting hot would the message stay on the message centre untill it cooled down? as mine only comes on and off a few times then stops for a day or two then brings up the message again so i am thinking its a duff sensor can anyome tell me where to find them all please?

The temperature sensor is on the end of the oil cooler.

For a V8 Gems 1998 Part no. ESR4329. I don't know if it's the same on diesel or Thor.

At Rimmerbrothers £ 49.29 ex. VAT (new)

If you want I can PM you a pic of it.

I'm probably being daft but I've had a good look at my oil cooler and I can't find the sensor. Is it normally not obvious? I can't see much but running my hand around the rad I can't feel any wires

Temp sensor is ESR4330 look closer. Mounted on side of cooler by two screws. Good news is they are only £63.88 from Rimmer Bros. Happy days. You had better hope it's just a bad connection i think. :D:D

Diesel Cooler and Sensor position is different to the V8's....

Not sure where the sensor is on the Diesels, but it isn't on the cooler...IIRC

Might depend on year on the diesel, I think it's on the cooler on my late 2000, not going out to check as it's ****ing down. Early diesels did not have the cooling fan so may be different.

That's sounds about right as mine is a1995, if anyone does know where the sensor is it could be helpful, I got the gearbox overheat message this morning but the car was cold and hadn't been driven it had been sat at idle for around 10 minutes before showing the message when I put it into drive, can't see how that would cause a gearbox to overheat
