That's sounds about right as mine is a1995, if anyone does know where the sensor is it could be helpful, I got the gearbox overheat message this morning but the car was cold and hadn't been driven it had been sat at idle for around 10 minutes before showing the message when I put it into drive, can't see how that would cause a gearbox to overheat
Look at component location in RAVE:)

So how would he get a gearbox overheat message?

Don't have a clue. But no gearbox temp sensor listed in component location table for any vehicle until 97. Unless i'm going blind. There has always been a transfer box sensor though. Item X108 gearbox temp switch only appears in 97. It's fitment for diesels is not shown in RAVE repair section, only one shown is petrol. My RAVE is 1999-2000 and there is no mention of the 99 on fitted fan either. So to be honest i am not sure what is going on.

temp sensor is on the cooler.
from what you say the fault does sound simply this and nothing more.

you can bridge the sensor out at a coonection block. this is mounted on the right side to the radiator.

let me know if you can't find it.

Just checked and I definitely haven't got a sensor on the oil cooler, just to confirm the oil cooler for the auto box is on the n/s behind the front bumper? What I did find was a couple of wires going into a bit of black plastic, not a connector though, looks like a connector but without any holes, with the number 5606428 on a label attached to it, the wires are both blue and trace back to the loom, it was wrapped around one of the brackets by the cooler, any idea what that mite be? Ill have a look at rave and see what I can find

It may well be the sensor that has fallen off the cooler. Look for a plug with one Black/Purple wire and one Black wire between slam panel and power steering pump to right hand side of radiator that is the plug for the temp switch. Go to Rimmers site and enter part number ESR4330 in search box, press search you will get a photo of what you should be seeing. Maybe the attachment lands have been broken off it.

Congrats wammers go to the top of the class lol that is indeed what I found, how and where does it attach to the cooler? I was looking for a screw in type sensor

That explains why mine came off then, the screw holes have snapped off my sensor, do you think if the sensor is actually bust it will give the message constantly? I've only had the message twice and both times seemed unlikely the box was even warm let alone hot, just thinking I can botch it back on temporarily but don't want to find out I really did have a gearbox problem that I've disguised

The switch is normally open circuit. Makes when hot breaks when cold. Sounds like it maybe duff if it's causing message when not in contact with cooler. Fitting new would be only safe way to do the job. Get your wallet out.
