Just recently, my 98 D1 V8 automatic gearbox has started making gurgling noises. You can hear the oil sloshing around.

There aren't any leaks, the level is right, the fluid is new and it was filled up per the manual.

Would this be a blocked filter or something more serious. Indicated mileage is 75k, no reason to think its dodgy.

I don't mean to sound impertinent, but you do know the specific procedure for checking the autobox oil level don't you?

1. Engine running throughout the procedure;

2. Go through each gear position and allow to take up drive;

3. Then back to P and now you can check the level.

Good luck and Marry Christmas to you

I'm surprised you can hear anything from the 'box. I'd have thought a gurgling sound would be far more likely be air in the heater matrix, especially as it's the highest point...

I agree with sidways. I cant hear a thing from my autpo box but I do have problems with air in the system and the sloshing in the heater matrix.

Yes, went through the procedure for refilling the box. Must admit, I hadn't even considered that it could be the heater matrix:doh: will check it out. Thanks for the tip.

tdi is about as easy an engine to fill as any , suspect many dont check coolant level by removing bung on thermostat housing regulary or condition of cooling system as a whole

That could be :) as the simple step by step procedure has been posted many times, so really there's no excuse to get air into the cooling system when refilling the system.
Of course assuming the systems condition isn't iffy :D
