Argh head gaskets gone!!

We don't have a sunroof, so that should be ok! Looking forward to those problems if we can get the damn engine working!

If LR don't pay out, and we take it to somebody else, I reckon they're going to try and sting us for the time they've taken to look at it...grrrr

Well, well, well - got a call from LR yesterday to tell us they're going to pay for it 100%!! hardly putting up a fight they're going to pay for all of it. SUCH a relief. although they say they won't warranty it, as they're paying for all of it, but we're going to try and contribute to paying it so we get 12 months warranty on what they're doing.

According do the dealer the plastic rods won't be changed - he said they have some new modifications that will solve the problem (yeah right!) that they've only just worked out...not sure of the details!

Good news ! Sounds like you have got a decent main dealer. Once its all done post up who your main dealer is for future reference.

One thing that worried me, is they said they won't be replacing the plastic rods to metal ones which I'd heard is the culprit for the HG going. They said that these 'mods' whatever they are, should solve the problem. Any idea if that's right or not?!

To Avoid This Mess ,i Have Since Done The Following To My Freelander 1.8 .took The Thermostat Out And Resealed The Piping,since The Fans Take So Long To Come On ,i Let One Of The Fan Turn On Once I Switch The Ignition On (through The Fuses Of Course). Since Then My Coolant Level Is Constant And At Normal Temperature,and The Engine Always Stays Within An Acceptable Operation Temp. I Am Less Concerned About The Heater In Winter. Try It And Save Yourself From Frequent Gasket Blow-ups.

go for a remote thermostat and lecky water pump - get the best of both worlds.

No drivetrain stopped the metal dowels cause they were scratching the heads during assembly.

The plastic ones are more likely to cause engine shuffle and have been known to give way.

All new kits come with metal dowels. Some of which dont fit the original holes in block and head >12mm

Not sure what you mean, is your fan on constantly now? no need as temperature sender will switch fan on if temp rises too high.

It is the cause of the over heating that needs investigating

Make sure they repair with the latest gasket (revised) and oil rail. I have done these to my 1.8 (104,000 miler) which has now covered 6,000 trouble free miles since summer rebuild.
