Any guesses on what caused this?

Changed me wheel the other day and found this lol

No idea what caused it, but it looks like it's been that way for a while.

Needless to say that a new disc is on order.

"Early attempts at Anti-Lock brake Systems were crude and prone to failure"

;)

that hole was man made, crudely - there's even a crappy chamfer on it !

bit difficult to see on the phone - but yu sure that aint just where summat has punched out, coz that can cause a chamfering effect? mind yu - there aint much room inside of that to allow for summat that size to get in between the disc and the hub.

Defender corrosion rates reach new high?

Cant see it being something "punching out". Energy required to burst through that thickness of carbon steel would be enormous.

For the life of me I cant think what could cause it though.

I wonder has it fallen off a jack or axel stand at some stage, then tidied up and put back on.

I'll try and post a pic of the inside when I get round to changing it.

I can't imagine anything getting in there that big to burst out like that, so I'll be checking to see if theres anything missing inside.

The handling and braking has never really felt like there was something wrong, just a mystery for now I guess.

if something had punched out there would be some significant inward damage as well

you can even see what looks to be tool marks on the chamfer, probably from a grinding disc in the hands of a cowboy

Thought more like this but maybe with braces on...

man made that. definately.

Did some doom brain think they could grease or lube something inside? axle seal? so they cut a hole!

It wasn't me, for a change...

I think it was the OP personally, here's some pictures of mine and his mechanical adventures changing a sump on a mk4 golf

Shovel, scissors, pruning shears, wtf!

.. and the hay was to presumably catch the oil? Didn't work well, that plan!
