And before I get shot down I have done a search but could not find anything that helps me much. Basically, I have a clunk when changing gear. The clunk happens when I let the clutch back up. I have had a look underneath and the A frame ball joint looks fine and was wondering what else I should be checking??

Gonna have to excuse my lack of knowledge on names of parts here but should the be play in what I presume is the front prop (the part that connects the front diff to the transfer box). I can turn this quite a bit each way and if I do it fast it seems to make the same clunk as the one I am hearing. If this is a possibility what is it that actually needs to be checked/changed on this to sort the problem.

Many thanks

Adam

to check the ball joint put the handbrake on and rock it as hard as you can back and forth and you will probably hear it clunk. mine was the same and it looked fine untill i checked it like that and it was goosed.

Main shaft and transfer gear if there's lots of slack in the transmision when coming on and off the power.
Go to Ashcrofts web site and it tells you how to check.

I had that clunk. It was the prop ujs. One specifically was completely destroyed.

The advice on here was that a little bit of rotational play is ok but any play other than that in any direction is a no no.

if using timken bearings you wont alter the shimming, and removing gear like that is only possible with 1.4 and 1.6 ratio boxes not on 1.2, 300tdis dont use gaskets like 200s and shouldnt be fitted if not as alter shimming 12 thou,
