Hi guys I am after a bit of help. I am building a ALRC competition vehicle and need drawings of a 109 chassis rails, I have a series 3 workshop manual and tried to scale up the chassis dimension drawings but they are not to scale so dipped out there. I have seen many people ask for bluprints on forums but I don't think there are any in the public domain so the only thing is to make drawings from a good chassis so please if there is any body with a 109 who lives near Derby (i live in Breaston) who would be kind enough too let me take some measurements I would very much appreciate the help.

Simon.

Hi it isn't the position of the outriggers or spring hangers that I want it is the shape of the chassis rails and as the drawings in the manual are not to scale I can't get the info of them.

Simon

The ALRC rules and reg's are very specific in that the chassis profile must be of factory design and as there is quite a bit of work in building a chassis from scratch I want to get it right as I have been caught out before and don't want some pedantic scrutineer refusing me a log book because the sweep of a chassis leg is 1/4 inch out.

Simon.

Of factory design? Are you 100% sure? we run 80 inch cut down RR classics into series one 80 and 86 inch all we ever done was add a rear x member and front bumper at the correct height to the body. I don't think they are that worried about chassis design at all TBH.

Better off cutting down a 110 or leaving it as the wheelbase can be ti within an inch I believe (need to check the latest regs) I take its for a comp safari motor and you wish to have coil springs.

The regulation is C.8.1. The chassis may be modified from one or more original Land Rover chassis or one(s) of Land Rover design maintaining a chassis rail separation of Land Rover Ltd design specification. The profile and rectangular cross section above and between the axles must remain as the original. All welding on the chassis must be of a high standard.

So it does not matter which body and chassis combo you use as long as the body matches the wheel base and yes it is for trials and comping. I am scratch building a chassis because I can build one 30% lighter than a cut down coil sprung chassis and build in internal bracing in just the right places. Also a 109 is the best profile for my design and as I know what scrutineers are like I want to get the profile spot on.

109/108 great wheelbase for a comp safari motor thing you will have issues with trials with the rear overhang and turning circle. lol.
Good luck mate I really do think you would be better off making it from a 110. If you tell the scruteneers its home made they will be over it to try and slam it,

Get in touch with your local ALRC scruteneer and ask for his comments.

I have spoken to the scrutineers this is why I need a good drawings. the rule is the way it is so none genuine chassis can be used ie richards etc but theirs are 3mm thick and I will be using 2 mm plus mine will be a 88" and I don't want to pod out for a new 109 and then cut it up when I can easily build my own.

Any one out there with a 109 :)

OK guys I now have a copy of an original Land rover 1/8th drawing for a 1962 109 that I can work of so I am pretty much sorted.

Simon

Hi just to update it has been a few months since I got the drawings also I got to check out a 109 with the body removed. I then made a template and from that a jig and have just had last week off and put this together.

Hi Thanks for the drawing it is the same as the one I have. I spent ages looking for a useful drawing & could only find workshop manual jobs which are not to scale so no use but the one you have posted is ok.

Anyway as you can see from the pic the chassis legs are now made, next job is to make some tooling for my press brake and then make some brackets and get the axles in

Hi Simon,
When are you hoping to have this motor ready by? and will you be trialling it as well as comping? at the moment I am building an 88" series 1 leafer so seeing someone else's build would be really good :) hope to see more pics as the build goes on :)

What club are you in? Im in the Peak and Dukeries

Callum

hi Dodge!

I am rebuilding a 80 inch leafer at the moment next job is to unbolt the cage and give it a good clean up and reaint. Move the rear spring hangers backwards fit a salisbury rear and a rangy wiith ashcroft shafts convert the 90 front axle to leafs and we should be good got til next years nationals i suppose!

Hi Callum.
I will be trialling and comping with P & D. Also this vehicle will be on coils so perhaps in the wrong place for a build thread.
I have fitted Wolf diffs in the Disco 2 axles and it will have a KV6 engine and PG1 gearbox fitted in the middle.
AS for completion hopefully next year.

Ah Brilliant, always good to have new members. Have you been to an event yet? with your long wheel base, trialling will be a struggle as the CCV's are really tight turns and dad only just gets round the turns in out Range Rover. for comping though, it will be a good motor. Have you got yourself a "green book" for this year? its the ALRC build guidelines.

Hi Callum.
The Chassis is 109 profile but is 88" wheel base. As for new member I wouldn't call myself new. I haven't competed for a few years  but I don't think they will let me in novice LOL.

This is me at Eckington before all the trees grew.
