2.25 Green Engine...colour, not eco!

Hello Series Fans.
So I am considering buying a S3 109 with what, I think, is a none original military engine and possibly a military chassis, none of which are deal breakers but I would just like to know what you think.
So the vehicle is a 1980 109 SW. The engine is a petrol 2.25 painted light green, which I have always thought was a military 7:1?
The Chassis has a removable gearbox cross member but doesn't appear to be the military one ton version with the heavier front dumb-irons and the extended shackles...so are there more than one type of S3 military 109 chassis or did Land Rover make removable cross members on the later civilian S3 chassis ?
Though I tried in vain to find a chassis number the paper work was all present and correct...and I know that doesn't mean the ID is legitimate...so I am assuming that somewhere in its life the 109 has had a chassis and engine swap rather than anything hooky!
Would you buy it? Thanks in advance.
 
What condition is the chassis in? You can order a replacement chassis with a bolt on crossmember for.the.gearbox. Anythi g is.possible after 40 odd years. It might have been a civie landy thats.had a new chassis and a military engine transplant. If it was originally a.military landy, I would have.thought there.would be.other clues. If it is military it could be.older than the civie.reg of 1980

My S3 is also 1980 and it too has a light green painted engine (which is original), it also has the much heavier bumpers putting those 2 together it was thus suggested that it was ex military but on further research it was found not to be. Perhpas they had a few engines and parts lying about that had been produced for military but were surplus to requirements and were thus put into civvie vehicles ---- just a thought!!

Yeah but I'm wondering if it was possible that LR had a few surplus engines/accessories that should have been destined for military vehicles but weren't, for some reason, required and they therefore incorporated into civvie vehicles. It's interesting that the vehicle flatcapandy refers to is 1980 as mine too is 1980, built in June '80, although it wasn't registered until 1981.

It would be interesting to know whether a light green painted engine was, in fact, sympomatic of military vehicles. Perhaps some of our more experienced members may be able to cast light on the subject???
 
I thought that, in civvy ones anyway, duck egg green and a smooth side to the engine block under the manifolds means earlier 3 bearing and red with extra, cross shaped strengthening bits cast into the block under the manifolds just above the sump means later 5 bearing. As for military or not I haven't got the foggiest.

I wouldn't read too much into colours.
Most people, when fitting a new engine, even if it is only new to them, will paint the engine.
And they may paint it with whatever they have left over in the paint cupboard.
Engine numbers are a more reliable guide. Link enclosed.
The Glencoyne site also has a guide to what it is like owning an old Land Rover, which may help you decide whether to buy it.
It is also accurate, as posted above^^^^, that all 5 Main Bearing Blocks have the strengthening webs in the lower area of the crankcase.
People often fit bits off military models on to civilian Land Rovers, as the double bumper mentioned above^^^^.
Don't read too much into that either.
