I want to use the 12v electrical socket behind the rear seat to power my new 12v car fridge. The cigar lighter on the front operates my sat nav so unable to use that one. The socket does not seem to work with the normal cigar lighter fitting. According to the Land Rover hand book this socket can only be used with "Land Rover approved " fittings so what fittings does this mean ? is it possible ? do I have to go Land Rover and get a fitting that will enable me to use a normal cigar lighter fitting for my fridge ? Anybody know ?
Cheers Malc

The cigar type fits in the socket but does not work.I would be supprised if its faulty as its not been used although. It does have a seperate higher volt fuse than the front socket so this makes me think it is different.I think I will check that fuse.If not its a call to Landrover on Monday.

I take it you are aware that, like the front socket, the ignition has to be switched on.

If your are doing that then possibly a fault with the socket/fuse. Standard cigar lighter plugs work.

On my D" my hand held spot light work in both front and rear socket but the ignition has to be on.

Having to have the ignition on is a bit daft imo, land rover messed up on that. Should be "live" all the time imo. One of the reasons I have added additional sockets.

I think the socket only works when the alternator is charging, well its like that on my D1 which has the suplimetary socket kit fitted.

I read the topic with interest and agree that the 12v live only with ign on is a pain in the a**

Is there an easy way i can change the rear aux power socket to permanent 12v+?

Anybody done a similiar mod?

SP ;)

thats easy, jsut run a new 12v cable, from the battery, and add a fuse for safety.

Trouble is,that any existing 12v supply is most likely rated for the job it is already doing so tapping a socket onto it is not a great idea.Even so,on the D1 at least I believe there is a 12v constant supply for the tow electrics....if you were not planning to tow maybe that could be used. The purple lead that hangs free (until used) in the O/SR light cavity,I think ?

However, its not THAT much of a job to run cables back, you only have to go through one of the bulkhead grommets then unscrew and lift out the plastic step strips and stuff the cables under the carpet.

Yes... i agree, i must admit it isn't a huge job at all to run the cable, and to be honest i think i'll probably just do that.

I do have towbar electrics as well, which is an option, but if a jobs worth doin... and all that :blabla:

Cheers guys
