ABS death trap!!!!! please help

Hi,
Iam hoping someone here can help me??
Since buying my disco in feb the abs lights have been on all the time was told it was to do with the sensor and knowing it was not a big problem i bought it, the abs still kicked in when needed then. but now the lights are still on, but the abs doesnt work and from time to time the brake peddle goes really hard and nowt happens appart from alot of noise and no sign of stopping, this usally happens when driving at slow speed and as it is an auto cant slow down through the gears as you could a manuel.
I have tested all the fuses under the bonnet with a resistance tester and all fine. Any ideas?????:confused:

I had a TDi 300 that did exactly the same and was quite frightening. I didn't have the time or money to get it fixed but because all ABS systems are failsafe ie you always have brakes even if the abs packs up - I decided to pull the electrical connector just next to the abs pump on the rhs (nearside) of the engine bay.

I knew I had no abs so drove accordingly but I never again had that horrible solid pedal and no brakes feeling.

Thanks, gonna do that in a bit, but got mot next month so need to sort it but at least i can drive it in the mean time without killing myself!! live down very narrow lanes so brakes are very important! just found a post with someone with the same problem which was solved by new sensor wiering. gonna book in for diognostics so can find out which wheel then take a trip to the brakers.

You can use the ABS BLINK CODE test . See disconewbie' s post for info on how to do it or do a Google search for the Landrover Abs Blink codes and you will find lots of info and it is free . I have more info at home on the Blink code definitions if required or if you live in or near County Durham I can stick it on Hawkeye diagnostics for you . Regards Jonathan

Have you checked all your wheel bearings etc as my ABS light stayed on all the time and i removed the fuses under the bonnet to stop my brake pedal doing the same as you describe. It was only when i found one of the wheel bearings was loose did i put the fuses back in and the ABS works properly now. I had an MOT in between refitting the fuses but got around the light being on by soldering some wires from the glow plug light to the abs light and just crossed my fingers that the tester wouldn't notice!:eek:Which coincidently he didn't:D

Will have a look at the abs blink codes if it seams simple enough i might give it a go or failing that get an unsuspecting friend round to give me a hand!!!

Just be carefull i had a civic type R a few years ago with the abs light on, i just ignored it. I got the solid brake pedal at 100 mph slowing down for a 30 mph corner as you can imagine i didnt make it and put it into some trees on the outside of the bend.
I wrote the car off an suffered a few bruises and luckily was on a private lane and no one else was involved.
Dont try to bodge it get it repaired by a garage its not worth risking lives for.
 
I did my abs a week ago, just needed the 2 front wheel sensors tapping back in place and the codes clearing with a paper clip.

I've got the same problem, except when it looses the brakes, the light has gone off, so I have some warning. Sometimes it goes off for a few minutes and the brakes are fine.

I was just gonna leave it till I get some time, but after reading that I am gonna sort it before I use it again.
 
if you want to be extra safe, then remove the main abs relay from underneath the glovebox. this will stop any of the hairy moments when you hit the pedal and nothing happens
 
I have taken the abs fuses out so I can drive without the breaks of death bit but light is still on do i need to disconect anything else?


ohhhh iam bloody stupid just seen post above!!! sorry guys, typical woman!!!!!!

Hey, that was a clever trick! I bet you still think you're a great driver.

Have you ever taken part in any REAL motorsport speed events?

Join a local car club, and try showing off to those guys, you know, the old guys who've been doing it for 40 years or so. When you can nearly keep up with them, you'll have learned quite a lot about driving, and staying on the road too.

my rear left has a fulty abs sensor. i have a s/h sensor so if i change it will the lights go off or do i need to disconect the batt. hifly hat did you use the paper clip.
 
Ive had this and its when the ABS light is OFF you need to be carefull, it will detect a fault when breaking at low speed, like braking at a junction (the times you REALLY need to stop!) Once its done its little death brake trick it will put the light on and disable ABS. To be sure the ABS system wont try to kill you, do what biglad says and unplug the power to the abs pump (box in passenger side under bonnet with lots of brake pipes going to it).
