"A showroom fresh Jimny is better off road, than a similar defender"

So in summary coming back to the original poster, the Defender is a better off roader, mainly IMO because of it's physical dimensions (extra size permitting extra ride height). Is it two and a half times better for it's price? Perhaps only your wallet can answer that. I took the Jimny, as it was more appropriate to my needs and I have a vastly more capable offroader than both the Jimny and Defender put together anyway.

In the mean time, I suspect you boys will continue to do what you have done so for years... Defender owners will refuse to except that there is anything better than their 4x4 and treat everybody else with total contempt.

A Suzuki can't stay with my Series off road, mind you a lot of others can't either.
The only advantage they've got is light weight which is useful in a few circumstances, but they're not that much lighter than a Series, a Defender is a lot heavier.

As to there being nothing better than a Defender, I'd rather have a Pinzgauer any day.

differant vehicle for a differant application. you cant compare a medium duty portal axled truck to a light utility 4x4 - i think he meant nothing comparable is better than a fender, and i reckon thats not that far out

i wonder how well jimnys hold their value compared to defenders and series :D

I can't wait for a test of this 'wonder' Jimney wagon vs a Defender :D
Is the usurper showing up at the next lannie meet I wonder?? :)
Youtube beckons...

As I said in my (longer) post guys, I've found the Defender is better off road with it's better ground clearance, sometimes better on road in mixed conditions with it's permanent 4wd, and can haul ass. In fact, I praised the Landie so much I'm surprised at the hostility. By contrast when I meet a "Landerite" in the flesh they are always much more friendly and trying to chat me up.

The cost aspect holds up for me. £25k on one car was too much for me - you still need to find the initial cash and that's a huge amount of money that I could put towards more important things like trailers, mini diggers, atvs, mountain pony, etc. My intention was to keep my Jimny for 10 years. In my mind it's disposable so get's more abuse/neglect than something that might cost more. Used options are interesting. older Landie's might drop to £10k but then you can still have a newer Jimny for £2k. It's when you get to older stuff that things get interesting. My cousin has a Series III he got off eBay for under £400. It's performance bargain of the decade, though it did help he has been a mechanic all his life. On the other hand, a local guy has a Series IIa. He doesn't know anything about them, it's his first 4x4 he just turns the key and it goes. That's awesome! If I ever have a man about the place that for once isn't useless, is good with a spanner (rather than being a spanner) and doesn't mind carrying bales of hay I might go down this route.

If the conclusion is "the Jimny is for people who can't afford a Defender" then that's probably correct! But I don't feel I've picked a poverty option, as the Jimny has real strengths. I am going to add a Defender to the fleet at some point because I just love the looks, most likely a 90 with hard top, so me and big sis' can cause mayhem in the hills. She has a 110 in desert colours and I'm convinced it could spin the Earth backwards. It's also the only vehicle that the highland cattle don't mess with (unlike the Polaris or Kawsaki Mule, which they try to push over!).

Nope, it's technically the non-road legal class but anyone can compete in that class if they want too.

I see that nobody has offered to turn up in their 90 and see if they can beat the Jimney in a trial. I mean if they are just toys driven by hairdressers what have you got to worry about? :D

It almost makes me wanna buy a 90 just to prove a point. I'll settle for a jimney versus 110 trial. Offroad, weight carrying, carrying capacity/volume, towing etc.

Somehow I can't see a jimney being able to hack what my 110 has to go through.

I think you mis-understand what I mean by a trial (also called RTV or CCTV or a whole host of things if you are with the AWDC :) ).

Nope, I don't misunderstand you Andy. My idea of a trial would be fitting all the gear from my landy into a jimney and then getting it to do what my landy is made to do in real life situations, hence the 'Offroad, weight carrying, carrying capacity/volume, towing etc' bit of my last post.:p

I'd be prepared to do a rtv trial in my 110 but at the moment I can't afford the repairs if I damage it.

You have hit the nail on the head there.....horses for courses. My point (way back in this thread) was about off-road ability, straight up ability nothing else considered. Langers was the only one who picked up on that.

The Jimney that I am referring to has been chosen by a competitor who would not except a vehicle that didn't excel in his particular field of motor sport. Once again horses for courses. That is the point I was trying to make :)

I will happily accept that with regard to load carrying in any situation your 110 will beat a Jimney. :)

Forgetting the actual difference in capacitys of the 2 vehicles, I'd like to see what the outcome would be if you loaded a jimney up to it's max weight and did the same with a 90 or 110 and then compared them offroad.

 Isn't this all a bit pointless???

As off roading enthusiasts, yes I'm sure we all welcome Non Landrover 4x4's even slitties. Cos its what we enjoy doing and as has been said before its not all about what ya drive it's about how ya drive.
:welcome2:

However as Landrover owners/enthusiasts dare I say Landrover Nuts on a Landrover Forum .............

It's not really that yer not welcome. It's not even a slight on you as a person. Its just I'm not really sure what ya could possibly get out of it. I mean why do ya think this is called Landyzone or do ya think we should change the name to any4x4zone????
:hippie::crazy: :clock::frusty:

Yeah well my Mk1 foot can take me places no 4x4 can go. :D

I do like the ad title at the bottom of the page. :p

I see your 2wd foot but it's no match for my 4wd horse's hoof!

I'm pretty sure lifechooser (original thread creator) was just baiting you all anyway. I mean, just look at the thread title. ;)

I have yet to see a jimny in Afganistan, or any other war, if they were so great and versatile surely they would be the vehicle of choice, for all the armed forces here and other countries...i've never seen an ex military Jimny, or any other jap 4X4, i know the taliban use hilux, and the like, but even they don't have Jimnys...would be funny to see a .50 calibre machine gun, mounted on one though, it might make it a little back heavy though :D

Jimny crickets (what i call them) fit a lot of peoples pockets (initially), and they are good value for money, nothing more from what i have seen/heard but i do ad i am by far means no offroad expert

Ha ha, a military Jimny, that'd be like watching the pope being driven around waving at people with his head sticking through the sun roof of a Matiz.

Seriously, a military Jimny would RILLY put the ****s up the enemy. Couple that with the new Euro fighter hang glider and Motor Torpedo Canoe and no ****er would dare threaten your oil supplies.

oi yer grumpy old fooker grippa yer leave the matizizz alone :(

I had to drive around for a few months in a ****ing Saxo & I took some right stick for that, so dun't think you're getting orf lightly for announcing your affection for yer ol' Matiz granny motor.

FFS, me Mum had one and even she said it was ****! Yer cun't use the air con cus' it noticably slowed the moment you hit the button! :D
