Just had 2 cars, a Clio and an X-Type (both 10 years old) fail MOTs between them on worn bearings, smoke emissions, rust, suspension and breaks... neither on more than 60k miles.

Harking back a year to when my old P38 sailed through with just an advisory... :)

I think this is most representative of what constant maintenance does!

You mean the bas+ard keeps breaking down so most of the car is new:D:D

+3 but... the electronics are quite bad :p
Apart from the RF receiver made by a German company called HUFF, the electronics are actually very good for the era, way ahead of any other car of the time. Failures are mostly due to water ingress and poorly protected wiring looms, the latter common to many marques. Leave the aircon on, stop the leaks and the electronics are reliable.

Headgaskets aint though lol
Ive had 3 p38s now and at one point or another thev'e all suffered from some form of headgasket leak
Thats why the replacement engine im putting in is getting a full recon first :)

+1
The only real gripe i have about mine was the HG's going (that's V8's for you). The rest of the repairs on mine are to be expected of a 12 year old 4x4.
Never had a sniff of any electrical issues.

Also had a head gasket go - but that was down to a failed thermostat sticking closed, and me stupidly not looking at the temp gauge every 20 seconds (I do now!). Never had any major electrics problems on my 16 year old p38, which after 164,000 miles is not bad going. Had lots of different cars in my motoring life and the RR has been by far the best. Even enjoyed learning about the eas:boxing::D

The comment was about electronics, the mechanics are crap, fragile V8's, poor diesel, overstressed geaboxes, rubbish diffs, shame, it could have been such a good vehicle.

V8 aren't that long-lived by modern standards due to the removal of zinc from oil giving the cam lobes and tappets a hard time but they can be reliable, the diesel is underpowered. The 4.6 transmission is up to the job and last well, later four pin diffs aren't bad and last pretty well if you keep on top of oil changes.
