Had a brain storm the other day and am investigation putting a Rolls Royce Silver Spirit engine in my P38. I am just imagining the smooth power from the Rollers 6.75 litre V8. So am starting to get some dimensions. The Roller is a 90 degree V8 against the Range Rover 60 degree so will be wider low down but it might work. Plenty of scrap Rollers. The ignition system is Motronic as is my Range Rovers ? Any suggestions welcomed (be polite!)

I've got to say that I love the idea. Had a Roller for a while and had great fun at traffic lights, loadsa power. Then I've got to ask, what gearbox are you thinking of using? I can't see any of the P38 boxes surviving too long.

EEk! You aren't thinking of having a manual are you?!?!?!

rolls royce did do one for a customer and put it into a 130 i have a guy who has bought it when it comes in will get some photos.

issues you will have the rolls is a taller engine.
you will need a modifed baffled sump
also the auto will be ok at a push

the ecu and systemm is i belive a different system to the range one and it will still need to comes with the rest of the car

If you used an earlier one from a shadow they have points and twin su's, so it would be easier. I had a Bentley T1 for a few years, smooth and **** loads of torque! Do it!

Very Good Advice, would like to see those photo's too.
I am going to talk to some Roller Breakers and see what is available and cost!
Don't suppose the whole front subframe and engine would work with airbags instead of the rollers springs? Track might be different, steering couplings etc etc Just a thought.

And V8HotRodBoy I also had a Shadow once it was a 1975 series one and I/We loved it, so smooth and what power, all torque just what you want! Yes a possible advantage with carbs and a (big) dizzy. The problem will be finding an engine still in good condition with a hundred thousand still available ?

electronicaly there will be quite a bit of trickery needed so the alarm and the rest of the dash recive the correct signals mite be a pain on that side of things

Interesting idea, be keen to see a project thread if you get this one off the ground

Will keep you informed and pics if it gets off the ground? I have a crashed P38 with rads, engine and gearbox out that will do for initial P38. I still have the Silver Shadow workshop manual (all five volumes) which has many pages of measurements so at the moment the drawing board is very busy.

Incidently someone had a Silver Shadow he was trying to sell (£1000 ex wedding rot box) and no one wanted it so he was giving it away free in the local newspaper, I rang him today but for free someone got it first. Probable not ideal but a free engine would be useful to hang into the crashed P38 to see what mods needed?

If it works out the project is destined for my Holland & Holland.

We had an 82 Spirit 1 not so long ago that had carbs and a dizzy. They must be able to b gotten dirt cheap now.

Problem is, if you get a nice runner you wont be able to justify cutting it up!

I had a race with a young lad down a motorway sliproad, made for entertaining 3 speed motoring. He got toasted, i got comfortable :D
