Hi Guys,
I do a few longish trailer towing trips a distance of 400 miles a few times each year with fifty sheep all up weight approx 3000kg . Do you think I ought to install an oil cooler for my r380 manual gearbox ? Its a nice smooth box and want to keep it so.
Opinions appreciated thanks.

See here: Defender towing.jpg

It's all quite within permissible towing weights so I would say probably not needed, you will be towing at a reasonable speed for the weight I would assume so should be fine, but I guess it never hurts.

Do you change your GB oil often? That would help a lot too - for a couple trips a year I would maybe be more interested in the Evo transmission oils available at Difflock shop.

In my opinion the best way to keep your gearbox in optimum condition is to change the oil regularly, and particularly before you do one of these sheep trips.

NB Don't forget to do the same with the transfer box. 3ltrs of MTF 94 for the gearbox; 3 ltrs of EP 80-90 GL5 for the tranny box; and 1.7ltrs for each diff - front and rear. Then you'll know all is best protected. 400 mls towing 3 tons is a goodly amount of work.
