Hello Guys, Im a newbie when it comes to Discoverys so please be patient with me haha!

I was having some sqwealing noises from the front end of the engine and thought I had narrowed it down to either the water pump or the tensioner.

I changed the water pump yesterday, put everything pretty much back together apart from the viscous fan, started it up and wooohooo no sqealing.

I refitted the fan and guard and fired her up and Do'h Sqwealing was back!!!

Im not sure if there is a bearing on the fan itself or if it the weight of the fan on the pulley coming from the timing belt that is causing the sqwealing.

Any advice guys? anything will be of help

Thanks

The "Penny trick" is what you need my friend and about 5 mins. Use the search facillity.

After that all the canaries will be gone,

Cheers

Thanks guys, I went to a land rover specialist and he has had a look and told me it most probably is the belt slipping, so he has given me a new belt, I will try that first then if not I will have a penny to hand ;o )

It'll be the penny.
cheapest thing to do on a Disco, My mate recently had the same thing the local 4x4 specialist quoted £235 to fix it with a new belt pulley tenssioner (robbing barstewards) , i did it in 5 minutes for a penny and a pint!!!!

Next time you go to your LR specialist with this problem he'll tell you need a new tensioner, after that a new water pump, after that a new viscous fan bearing etc etc etc.

Before you spend any more money, just try the Penny Trick. It'll take you 5 mins tops and almost always fixes the problem.

If you've read the instructions for doing this, you're probably thinking that this is a bodge and to be ignored. Trouble is, bodge or not it works and it's been working on my Tdi 300 for 11 months & 12,000 mls.

Your choice of course, but it wouldn't costs ANYTHING to try??;)

Cheers
Dave

Why ask for the advice, get the answer...and then go 'n do something completely different?   If you'd done the penny thing, you coulda driven to your LR bloke, and turned round without going in and parting wif yer dosh most likely, cos the skweekin had gone!

The belt didnt cost me a thing as I know the bloke, and as I say im new to whole land rover scene so I guess I will learn and improve!

I have a shiny new penny to try this afternoon

Thanks for the help guys, its appreciated

Hi Mike, on the subject of learning, one huge advantage with owning a Landy of any generation is the small cost of spares & service parts.

Companies like Paddock Spares will deliver stuff to your door and their prices, I find, are as good if not better than most.

Eg a filter kit inc air, oil and fuel filters for only £6.28+vat see link:

Filter Kit - Disco 300TDI

Two types of exhaust system for the Tdi 300:

Discovery 300TDI Sports Exhaust

ESR2391 Centre and Rear Silencer Assembly - 300TDI Non Cat (except Japan)

The vast majority of bits you'll need to replace can be bought for peanuts.

Good luck with your new baby,

Dave
