I got mine on without any help from this stuff.

would a light smear of greese be ok to hold the gasket in place.

To be honest you shouldn't need anything. The gasket (I assume we're talking about the autobox sump??) is soft rubber and perfectly capable of sealing the sump on it's own.
Careful lining up before installation will avoid any problems.

I think the problem people are talking about is that the gasket does not sit in a nice groove. There is a small shaping to the gasket but not enough to hold it in place. Even on the bench it was not possible to get mine to sit on the sump nicely.
