hi all, my 200tdi doesnt put any lights up on dash when i engage diff locks...does this mean they arnt working? or could it be the bulb?
its a 1993 200tdi. just starting to worry they aint working or summat lol.

Could be a blown bulb, might be the diff lock not working. It's diffident to tell over the 'net.
Are you getting stuck where you don't expect to?

no nothing like that mate, just the toher day i thought i see what diff locks can do as ive never used em (not had the disco long) and no light came on like ive seen described about so i didnt try them lol. will get iot jacked up and try

Its a centre difflock and not axle difflocks As I think you believe they are. It locks the front and rear propshafts together as one and will transmit equal power to front and rear propshafts. Difflocks in the axle differential lock the wheels together as one. These are very different Jai

Common ones are ARB air lockers, Kam use solonoids to lock so they are electronically operated and others include detroit locker automatically operate when needed but has some disadvantage on the road and some others use friction clutches and can slip in the front axle.

ARB,
Detroit,
Eaton,
Kam,
Quaiffe,

All do different jobs. If you have ABS you can cheat a tiny bit but that comes with experience and driving.

I suggest you start doing a search, this whole subject has been covered many times.
Just remember though, Land Rover have been making 4x4s since 1948, and have an excellent reputation for their off road ability, and no Land Rover came with an axle diff lock until 2004, so you need to be doing extreme off roading before you need to start thinking about splashing out £500..
I know I'm going to ruffle a few feathers here, but half the time axle diff locks are masking poor driving, the other half people are taking their vehicles way beyond what they were designed for.

No amount of locking diffs will get you out of the **** if your tyres have no grip. You could have all the flash toys with the stickers to prove it and be stuck in the middle of a wet field. Locking axle diffs would undoubtedly be of use in a rocky situation where you can't keep all your wheels on the ground but for most people I reckon they'd be a waste of money.

What do you do with your car?

I use mine (200tdi ARB F&R) in the odd competition and think they are great. If I did not push it as hard as I do then as already mentioned I would not bother. If on the other hand you want a little edge then fit one to the rear only.

Fitting them to the front makes it a pig to steer and puts serious strain on the rest of the front axle drive components.

I would say general (taking your time choosing your route) off road use I hardly if ever use them and I am off road every week.

Pretty much the same as a winch, I fitted one and have only used it to recover OTHER people!!!

regards

Dave

forgot to mention guys, the reason my diff lock light didnt come on it that the lever goin to it had worn on the pins, i put new pins in and it engages fine now and light comes on dash.

Cool you found your problem.

To really appreciate what a landy can do you need to go and see an ALRC rules CCV. Landys being driven in the right manner can be awsome without difflocks or even an RTV trials event. I guarantee you that a top driver will be driving a series vehicle or have progressed from a series vehicle onto a later model. Difflocks are an easy cheat that work great and in the hands of an already good driver absolutly amazing but I would suggest you learn to drive either trials or comps before paying out for items you probably don't need. Anyone can buy their way through the mud and get the next mod difflocks, snorkels, winches, etc Put an old farmer boy vs the man in the polished 90 V8 hybrid with all the toys in a bog standard series mota with a good set of sats in an RTV who is going to be the better driver??? Perfect your skills before blowing a mortgage on your vehicle. Jai

dont worry pal, i aint goin gunn be buying diffl ocks, im happy with the standard items, wont need them much but handy to know they work lol

now im confused.
so my 200tdi has centre diff locks?
so it doesnt make the 4 wheels turn together? without transmitting power to the wheel with no traction?

You don't have "difflocks" you have one, centre differential lock, that's all.

That means that you can still get stuck and people do!!!

Land Rovers are not as infallible as people might think.
